Robinhood IRA review: Is it worth it in 2026?

Key takeaways

The Robinhood IRA is worth it if you contribute at least $3,000 a year and can leave the match in place for 5 years, because at $3,000 a year, Robinhood Gold's larger match covers the cost of the Gold subscription.2The costs come when you leave: Robinhood takes back matched money that leaves early. The Gold transfer bonus has also ended. This review covers the match, the two clawback rules, fees and features, the cost to leave, and the closest alternatives.
This review covers the Robinhood IRA only. The Robinhood review covers the whole platform, and the best Roth IRA accounts roundup compares Robinhood with five other providers.
Who is the Robinhood IRA for?
The Robinhood IRA is built for a self-directed saver who contributes every year and wants to be paid for it, not for someone who wants mutual funds or a hands-off account.
Savers who max out their IRA every year
A saver who puts in the full limit every year gets the most from the match. If you're still choosing the account type, start with what a Roth IRA is.
Savers rolling over an old 401(k)
An old 401(k) rolled into a self-directed Robinhood IRA earns a 1% match with no cap. Roll over $100,000 and Robinhood adds $1,000. Robinhood also reimburses up to $75 of the old broker's fee when an incoming transfer is $7,500 or more.
Options traders who want them in a Roth
Robinhood allows Level 2 options inside its IRAs for approved customers, and gains inside a Roth aren't taxed as you go.
Robinhood IRA pros and cons
The Robinhood IRA pays you when money goes in and charges you when money comes out.
Robinhood IRA pros
- 1% match on contributions, or 3% with Gold
- 1% on IRA transfers and 401(k) rollovers, with no cap
- $0 commissions on stocks, ETFs, and options, and no account fee
- Level 2 options inside the IRA
- IRA limited margin, which lets you trade with unsettled funds without borrowing
Robinhood IRA cons
- Matched money has to stay 5 years or a removal fee can apply
- Gold has to stay 1 year to keep the extra 2%
- $100 to transfer the account out
- Managed Strategies IRAs earn no match
- Gold costs $60 a year whether or not you contribute
If the $100 exit fee and the 5-year hold are the dealbreaker, Fidelity charges $0 to transfer an IRA out and pays no match it could take back (see our Fidelity IRA review).
How does the Robinhood IRA match work?
The Robinhood IRA match is cash Robinhood deposits into your IRA as a percentage of what you put in, with one rate for contributions and another for money you move over. The match doesn't count toward the IRS contribution limit. A saver who maxes out the IRA gets the match on top of the limit.
3% on contributions with Gold, 1% without
Gold triples the contribution match on self-directed IRAs. The table shows what the match pays on a maxed 2026 contribution.3Robinhood's Gold page words the offer as a "3% boost on annual IRA contributions, up to $225 based on the 2026 maximum," with no end date stated, as of October 6, 2026.
| 2026 contribution | Without Gold (1%) | With Gold (3%) |
|---|---|---|
| $7,500, under 50 | $75 | $225 |
| $8,600, 50 and older | $86 | $258 |
1% on transfers and rollovers, Gold or not
IRA transfers and 401(k) rollovers earn 1% whether or not you pay for Gold. Robinhood's 2% Gold transfer bonus ended on April 30, 2026.4Move $100,000 in today and you'll receive $1,000, the same as someone without Gold. The best places to roll over a 401(k) roundup compares this 1% with five other providers.
The 5-year hold and the early removal fee
Matched money has to stay in your Robinhood IRAs for 5 years. The early removal fee applies only when a withdrawal or transfer leaves your remaining balance below what you deposited plus the match. So a saver whose investments have grown can often take money out without paying anything back. Robinhood calculates the fee across all your Robinhood IRAs, and the fee can apply to a required minimum distribution too.
| What you do | When | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Withdraw, balance stays at or above deposits plus match | Within 5 years | No fee |
| Withdraw, balance falls below deposits plus match | Within 5 years | Fee equal to the match on the withdrawn amount |
| Transfer the IRA out | Within 5 years | Same fee may apply, plus the $100 ACATS fee |
| Anything | After 5 years | The match is yours |
The 1-year Gold rule
Cancel Gold within a year of your first Gold match and Robinhood takes back the extra 2%, though the base 1% stays. On a $7,500 contribution, the clawback is $150. If the IRA holds no cash to cover it, Robinhood may sell positions to collect.
The match is taxable if you convert to Roth
A match earned in a traditional IRA "generally would be taxable" if you later convert it, in Robinhood's own words, and Robinhood issues no 1099 for the match itself. Keep your own record of the match if a Roth vs traditional IRA conversion is anywhere in your plans.
Robinhood IRA fees and features
Robinhood charges nothing to open, hold, or trade in a self-directed IRA. Every cost Robinhood does charge is tied to the match or to leaving.
| Fee or feature | Robinhood IRA |
|---|---|
| Account or maintenance fee | $0 |
| Commissions on stocks, ETFs, and their options | $0 |
| Robinhood Gold (optional) | $5 a month |
| Robinhood Strategies (managed IRA) | 0.25% a year, free above $100,000 with Gold |
| Outgoing ACATS transfer | $100 |
| Incoming transfer fee reimbursement | Up to $75 on transfers of $7,500 or more |
Commissions and account fees
Stock, ETF, and options trades carry no Robinhood commission in an IRA, and stock and ETF options carry no per-contract fee either, only a $0.04 regulatory pass-through. Index options are the exception, at $0.50 a contract or $0.35 with Gold. There's no account or maintenance fee.
Account types and investments in a Robinhood IRA
Robinhood offers traditional and Roth IRAs, up to two of each: one self-directed and one managed. The self-directed IRA holds stocks, ETFs, and options. IRA limited margin lets you trade with unsettled funds, not borrow. Roth eligibility for 2026 phases out across these income ranges.
| 2026 Roth IRA income phase-out | Range |
|---|---|
| Single filers | $153,000 to $168,000 |
| Married filing jointly | $242,000 to $252,000 |
Options in a Robinhood IRA
Options in a Robinhood IRA stop at Level 2, which covers long calls, covered calls, long puts, and short puts. Spreads aren't on that list.
Robinhood Strategies, the managed IRA
Robinhood Strategies manages an IRA for 0.25% a year, and Gold members pay nothing on every dollar above $100,000.5The trade-off is the match. A managed Robinhood IRA earns no contribution match at all, so only savers who pick their own investments get the 3%. Our Wealthfront vs Robinhood comparison prices that managed IRA vs a robo-advisor at the same fee.
What does it cost to leave a Robinhood IRA?
Leaving a Robinhood IRA costs $100 by ACATS transfer, plus any part of the match Robinhood can still take back.
| Cost | Amount |
|---|---|
| Outgoing ACATS transfer | $100 |
| Early match removal fee | Equal to the match on money that leaves within 5 years, if your balance drops below deposits plus match |
| Gold cancellation within a year | The extra 2% of the Gold match |
After 5 years the match is yours, and the $100 is the only exit cost left.
Is the Robinhood IRA worth it?
Yes, the Robinhood IRA is worth it for a saver who contributes at least $3,000 a year, picks ETFs, and stays 5 years. It's a poor fit for anyone likely to move the account soon. No independent rating covers the IRA on its own. The useful measure is dollars, not stars.
Robinhood pays the match to gather assets and uses the clawbacks to keep them. That is a fair trade if you were staying anyway. Compare Robinhood with the best Roth IRA accounts if you're still shopping. If you've decided, you can open a Robinhood IRA through Tweed's link.
Is the Robinhood IRA match worth it?
The Robinhood IRA match is worth it if you leave the matched money alone. Five years of maxed contributions with Gold nets more than eight times the $100 it costs to leave. The table below assumes a saver under 50 who contributes the 2026 limit every year, holds the Gold subscription the whole time, and never touches the matched money.
| Five years of maxing a $7,500 IRA | Without Gold | With Gold |
|---|---|---|
| Match earned | $375 | $1,125 |
| Gold cost | $0 | $300 |
| Net match | $375 | $825 |
| Fee to transfer out afterward | $100 | $100 |
Is Robinhood Gold worth it for an IRA?
Robinhood Gold pays for itself on the IRA alone once you contribute $3,000 a year. Below $3,000, the subscription costs more than the extra match it buys.
| Annual contribution | Match without Gold | Match with Gold | Extra from Gold | Gold cost | Net from Gold |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| $2,000 | $20 | $60 | $40 | $60 | -$20 |
| $3,000 | $30 | $90 | $60 | $60 | $0 |
| $7,500 | $75 | $225 | $150 | $60 | $90 |
| $8,600 | $86 | $258 | $172 | $60 | $112 |
Robinhood IRA vs alternatives
Robinhood's closest IRA alternatives are Fidelity, which pays no match but charges nothing to leave, and SoFi, which pays 1% without a subscription. For an index fund investor, Vanguard vs Robinhood covers the same choice with Vanguard.
| Robinhood | Fidelity | SoFi | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Contribution match | 1%, 3% with Gold | None | 1% |
| Transfer and rollover match | 1%, no cap | None | 1% on 401(k) rollovers, no cap |
| Transfer-out fee | $100 | $0 | $100 |
| Managed IRA fee | 0.25%, no match | Fidelity Go: $0 under $25,000, 0.35% of the whole balance from $25,000 | 0.25% |
| What you can hold | Stocks, ETFs, options | Stocks, ETFs, options, mutual funds, Treasuries, bonds | Stocks, ETFs, options, mutual funds with fees |
Robinhood IRA vs Fidelity
Robinhood wins on the match, while Fidelity costs less to leave, since Fidelity charges $0 to transfer out and sells its own index funds at a 0% expense ratio. Robinhood vs Fidelity prices the two brokers over five years, margin and cash included.
Robinhood IRA vs SoFi
SoFi pays 1% on contributions with no subscription, so a saver who would never pay for Gold gets the same base match at either broker. Gold lifts Robinhood to 3%, and both charge $100 to leave. The SoFi Active Investing review covers SoFi's terms.
Run your own number before you chase a match
The value of a match depends on your contributions and how long you hold the account. Run the Tweed retirement calculator twice, once with the match and once without, and see whether the gap matters at your horizon. The Robinhood review covers margin, cash, and safety outside the IRA. If the numbers hold up, you can open a Robinhood IRA with Tweed's referral link.
Frequently asked questions about the Robinhood IRA
Is my Roth IRA safe with Robinhood?
Yes, your Roth IRA at Robinhood is held by Robinhood Financial LLC, a SIPC member, with trades cleared by Robinhood Securities LLC. SIPC protects up to $500,000 per customer, including $250,000 in cash, if a member broker fails. SIPC does not protect against investment losses or against Robinhood taking back a match under its own rules.
Is Robinhood IRA FDIC insured?
No, a Robinhood IRA is not FDIC insured, because the stocks and ETFs in it are securities, not bank deposits. Robinhood states that investing products offered by Robinhood Financial are not FDIC insured and involve risk, including possible loss of principal. SIPC coverage applies instead.
Why can't I withdraw from Robinhood Roth IRA?
A withdrawal from a Robinhood Roth IRA usually waits on settlement, because cash from a sale has to settle before it can leave the account. Separately, IRS rules decide whether the money comes out tax-free: contributions can come out at any time, but earnings taken before 59½ and before the account is five years old can be taxed and penalized.
Can I have a Roth IRA at Robinhood and Fidelity?
Yes, you can have a Roth IRA at Robinhood and another at Fidelity, but the IRS limit covers all your IRAs combined, not each account. In 2026 that shared limit is $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 and older. Robinhood matches only what lands in the Robinhood IRA, and Fidelity pays no match at all.
Does Robinhood offer a 401k match?
No, Robinhood does not offer a 401(k) match, because only an employer can match contributions to a workplace plan. What Robinhood pays is an IRA match, based on what you deposit rather than on your salary. An employer 401(k) match and Robinhood's IRA match can stack, since an IRA and a 401(k) are separate accounts with separate IRS limits.
Should I open a Roth IRA with Robinhood or Charles Schwab?
A Roth IRA at Robinhood or Charles Schwab costs the same to open and to trade stocks and ETFs in: $0 at both. Robinhood's case is its contribution match. Schwab's case is breadth: its IRA page lists rollover, inherited, and custodial IRAs alongside traditional and Roth accounts, and its options trades cost $0.65 per contract.
Can I open a Robinhood IRA for my child?
No, Robinhood does not list a custodial IRA, so you can't open one for a child there. Robinhood's IRAs are traditional and Roth, up to two of each. A teenager with earned income would need a broker that offers custodial IRAs, such as Charles Schwab, whose IRA page lists them next to its Roth accounts.
