What is Robinhood?

Robinhood is an app-first broker for stocks, ETFs, options, and crypto that charges $0 commissions and sells an optional Gold plan for $5 a month. Gold triples the IRA match to 3% and pays 3.6% APY on eligible brokerage cash.

The Robinhood review covers the platform, safety, and Gold in full. This page stays on the costs that change when Schwab is the alternative.

What is Charles Schwab?

Charles Schwab is a full-service broker that charges $0 online commission on listed stocks and ETFs, sets no account or trade minimums, and sells thousands of mutual funds with no transaction fee through its OneSource list. It also runs Schwab Intelligent Portfolios, a robo advisor with a $5,000 minimum.

Schwab and Robinhood are both Tweed partners. The Charles Schwab review covers Schwab's research, support, and account range.

Robinhood vs Schwab features compared

Each section below opens with the broker that comes out ahead. A section also notes when Tweed couldn't confirm Schwab's figures.

Options trading

Robinhood wins for an options trader, because it charges no commission on options, while Schwab charges $0.65 per contract on top of a $0 base.3The $0.65 fee barely shows on a single trade, but it adds up for anyone who rolls positions every week. Robinhood also allows Level 2 options inside an IRA. Level 2 covers long calls, covered calls, long puts, and short puts, which is enough for most income and hedging strategies an IRA saver would run. Schwab's advantage for traders is its tools, not its price.Interactive Brokers vs Schwab compares those tools with IBKR's per-share Pro plan.

The IRA match

Robinhood wins for an IRA saver who contributes every year, because it pays 1% on contributions, or 3% with Gold, and Schwab's pricing page lists no IRA match. Robinhood's Gold page words the offer as a "3% boost on annual IRA contributions, up to $225 based on the 2026 maximum," with no end date stated as of October 6, 2026. The match has three conditions: matched money must stay in the account for 5 years, Gold must stay active for a year or the extra 2% is taken back, and a managed Robinhood IRA earns none.

Mutual funds and bonds

Schwab wins for a fund investor, because it sells thousands of mutual funds with no transaction fee through OneSource and buys secondary bonds at $1 per bond. Robinhood is built around stocks, ETFs, options, and crypto. Funds outside OneSource cost up to $74.95 per purchase at Schwab. That fee applies to every purchase, including the small monthly ones most savers make, so check whether the fund you want is on the OneSource list before you place the order.

Managed accounts

Schwab wins for a hands-off investor with at least $5,000, because Intelligent Portfolios charges no advisory fee at any balance above that.4 Robinhood Strategies charges 0.25% a year, waived above $100,000 for Gold members. A managed Robinhood IRA earns no IRA match.

Cash yield and margin rates

Robinhood is the only one of the two whose cash and margin rates Tweed could confirm. Gold pays 3.6% APY on eligible brokerage cash.5 Gold members also borrow their first $1,000 interest-free. The margin tiers below applied as of September 17, 2026. Schwab's sweep yield and margin tiers weren't confirmed on schwab.com for this update, so they aren't compared.

$1 million to $10 million4.5%
$10 million to $50 million4.45%
Above $50 million4.20%

Transferring an account

Robinhood is cheaper to move into than out of. It charges $100 to transfer an account out. For incoming transfers of $7,500 or more, Robinhood pays up to $75 of your old broker's fee, which helps if Schwab is the broker you're leaving. Schwab's own transfer-out fee is the one figure here Tweed couldn't confirm on schwab.com.

Robinhood vs Schwab fees for three kinds of investor

Robinhood vs Schwab fees depend on how you invest, so here is a year priced for three investors. Commissions, matches, and advisory fees are modeled; returns and fund expense ratios are not. Most people are a mix of the three.

An options trader

An options trader saves the whole contract fee at Robinhood, which comes to $650 a year at 1,000 contracts. The table assumes stock and ETF options, since Robinhood charges $0.50 a contract on index options, or $0.35 with Gold. Pass-through regulatory and exchange fees apply at both brokers.

An IRA saver maxing the 2026 limit

An IRA saver under 50 who maxes the account comes out $165 ahead in a year at Robinhood with Gold, before any fee to leave. At 50 and up, the Gold match on a maxed account rises to $258.

A hands-off investor using a robo advisor

An investor using a robo advisor pays no advisory fee at Schwab once past the $5,000 minimum. Robinhood waives its 0.25% fee only for Gold members, and only above $100,000.

Robinhood vs Schwab for a Roth IRA

Robinhood vs Schwab for a Roth IRA comes down to the match vs the range of accounts. Robinhood pays you to contribute, while Schwab covers more kinds of IRA under one login. Schwab's range matters most to someone who expects to inherit an IRA someday or wants a custodial account for a child next to their own Roth. Neither broker charges to open a Roth IRA.

The uncapped transfer match is the bigger number for anyone moving an existing IRA, because a $100,000 rollover earns $1,000. Should you choose Robinhood or Schwab?

Should you choose Robinhood or Schwab? The answer depends on two habits: how often you trade options and whether you put money into an IRA every year. If Fidelity is also on your list, Schwab vs Fidelity compares the two full-service brokers.

Choose Robinhood if

  • You trade options often enough for $0.65 a contract to add up
  • You contribute to an IRA every year and can leave matched money alone for 5 years
  • You want stocks, options, and crypto in one app

Choose Schwab if

  • You want mutual funds, bonds, or a robo portfolio with no advisory fee
  • You need a rollover, inherited, or custodial IRA
  • You'd rather not track a match's holding rules or a subscription

Run your own numbers before you pick a broker

Run the Tweed retirement calculator with your real contribution twice, once with a 3% match and once without, to see whether the match changes your balance by the year you retire. If neither broker fits, check thebest IRA accounts list. If Robinhood fits, you can open a Robinhood account through Tweed's referral link. If Schwab fits, you can open a Charles Schwab account through Tweed's referral link.

Frequently asked questions about Robinhood vs Schwab

Can I have a Roth IRA at Robinhood and Schwab?

Yes, you can have a Roth IRA at Robinhood and another at Schwab, but one IRS limit covers both accounts combined. In 2026 that is $7,500, or $8,600 at 50 and older. Only the Robinhood share earns a match, so some savers put matched dollars there and keep mutual funds at Schwab.

What is the downside to Charles Schwab?

The downside to Charles Schwab is cost on less common trades, not on everyday stock trades. Broker-assisted trades add $25 each and secondary bond trades carry a $10 minimum. Schwab also pays nothing on IRA contributions, so a saver who wants a match has to look elsewhere.

Is Robinhood or Schwab safer?

Robinhood and Schwab are equally protected against a broker failing, because SIPC covers securities at both up to $500,000 per customer, including $250,000 for cash. Neither protection covers market losses. Robinhood accounts are held by Robinhood Financial LLC, a SIPC member, and Schwab lists its own membership on its account-protection page.

Why can't I pull my money out of Robinhood?

You usually can't pull money out of Robinhood because the cash hasn't settled yet or a recent deposit is still on hold. Both holds are standard at most brokers. Money inside an IRA follows IRS withdrawal rules as well, and pulling matched money out early can cost you the match.

Who is Robinhood's biggest competitor?

Robinhood's biggest competitors are other app-first brokers such as Public, SoFi, and Webull, plus Schwab and Fidelity. Public and SoFi also pay a 1% IRA match. Paid tiers now go higher than Gold's 3%: Webull Premium pays 3.5%, and Public Reserve, at $20 a month, pays 4%, with no end date stated as of October 6, 2026.

Is Charles Schwab good for day trading?

Charles Schwab is good for day trading stocks and ETFs on price, since online trades cost $0. Options day traders pay $0.65 a contract. The same pattern day trader rules apply at Schwab and Robinhood alike, so neither broker lets a small margin account day trade freely.

Is Fidelity better than Robinhood or Schwab?

Fidelity is not better across the board, and it is much closer to Schwab than to Robinhood. Like Schwab, Fidelity pays no IRA match and charges per options contract, and its ZERO index funds have a 0% expense ratio. Fidelity charges $0 to transfer an account out, vs Robinhood's $100.
