Key takeaways

  • 41% of IRA assets, or $8.0 trillion, was invested in mutual funds at the end of Q2 2026.1
  • When choosing between Vanguard and Robinhood, start with whether your plan is built on index mutual funds or on ETFs plus a contribution match before you compare fees.
  • Vanguard is the stronger fit for an index fund investor who buys and holds, and Robinhood for an ETF saver who keeps Gold and wants the larger IRA match.
In this article

Vanguard vs Robinhood is a choice between index mutual funds and a contribution match: Robinhood pays up to 3% on IRA contributions with its Gold plan, and Vanguard pays no match but is built around its own funds.2 Both charge $0 for online stock and ETF trades, so the differences sit in options, managed accounts, account fees, and what each broker lets you hold. This guide compares Vanguard and Robinhood across funds, the IRA match, options, managed portfolios, and the cost to leave.

Vanguard vs Robinhood at a glance

Vanguard vs Robinhood ties on stock and ETF commissions and splits on nearly everything an IRA saver weighs. Vanguard's figures come from investor.vanguard.com and Robinhood's from its own pages, all read in the week ending October 6, 2026.

What is Vanguard?

Vanguard is the index fund company that also runs a brokerage, with $0 online stock and ETF trades, its own mutual funds, and IRAs in traditional, Roth, spousal, and rollover versions.3 It charges a $25 annual account service fee per brokerage account. Sign up for e-delivery of statements, or hold $1 million in qualifying assets, and the fee goes away.

Vanguard has no subscription tier to weigh.

What is Robinhood?

Robinhood is an app-first broker for stocks, ETFs, options, and crypto, with a $5-a-month Gold plan that includes most of its extras: the larger IRA match, a higher cash rate, and cheaper margin up front. Robinhood's IRA comes in traditional and Roth versions, up to two of each.

Robinhood is a Tweed partner. The Robinhood review covers the app and its safety record, and theRobinhood IRA review walks through the match terms.

Vanguard vs Robinhood features compared

Vanguard wins on funds and managed index portfolios, and Robinhood wins on the match, options, and published rates. Each section opens with the broker that comes out ahead.

Index funds and mutual funds

Vanguard wins for a fund investor, because its own index funds are the center of the platform. Minimums are $1,000 for Target Retirement Funds and $3,000 for most Admiral Shares index funds.4 Some Vanguard funds also charge a purchase or redemption fee of 0.25% to 1.00% of the transaction, so check the fund page before you trade in and out. Robinhood offers no traditional mutual funds, so Robinhood doesn't fit a plan built on mutual funds.

The IRA match

Robinhood wins for an IRA contributor: it pays 1% on contributions, or 3% with Gold, while Vanguard pays nothing. The match has conditions. Matched money has to stay in the account for 5 years, or an early removal fee can take it back. Cancelling Gold within a year removes the extra 2%. Managed Strategies IRAs earn no match at all.

Options trading

Robinhood wins for a stock or ETF options trader, because it charges $0 per contract on those options, while Vanguard charges $1 per contract for clients under $1 million in qualifying assets. Index options are the exception at Robinhood: $0.50 a contract, or $0.35 with Gold, plus exchange and pass-through regulatory fees. For a buy-and-hold index investor, neither price matters much.

Managed portfolios

Vanguard wins for a hands-off index investor at most balances, because Digital Advisor charges 0.20% on index portfolios from a $100 minimum. Robinhood Strategies charges 0.25%, and it is free above $100,000 for Gold members. A managed Robinhood IRA earns no match, which is a cost the fee rate doesn't show.

Cash and margin

Robinhood is the only one of the two that publishes its cash and borrowing rates: 3.6% APY on eligible brokerage cash with Gold, and margin at 5.25% on balances up to $50,000. Vanguard's settlement fund yield wasn't confirmed on its pages for this update, and Robinhood's own pages didn't confirm whether the 3.6% applies to IRA cash. Both Robinhood rates are variable, so treat them as a snapshot, not a promise.

Account fees and transfers

Vanguard's recurring fee is the easier cost to avoid, because e-delivery waives the $25 account service fee. Leaving costs $100 at both brokers: Vanguard charges it to close or fully transfer an account, and Robinhood charges it on any outgoing transfer. Robinhood does reimburse up to $75 of another broker's fee when you move $7,500 or more in.

Vanguard vs Robinhood fees for three kinds of investor

Vanguard vs Robinhood fees depend on what you hold, not on trading stocks, because both charge $0 for that. The tables below use the 2026 limit and today's terms for every year, and they leave out market returns and fund expense ratios.

An ETF saver maxing an IRA for five years

An ETF saver who maxes the IRA every year comes out $825 ahead at Robinhood with Gold after five years, before any fee to leave.5 As of October 6, 2026, Robinhood's Gold page describes the offer as a "3% boost on annual IRA contributions, up to $225 based on the 2026 maximum," with no end date stated. Without Gold, the 1% match still beats Vanguard, which pays no match.

A hands-off investor with $10,000 managed

A hands-off investor pays less at Vanguard on a $10,000 index portfolio, and the gap stays small. Vanguard quotes 0.20% as a gross fee, and its own all-in estimate is lower.

An options trader

A stock or ETF options trader pays nothing per contract at Robinhood, apart from pass-through regulatory fees, while Vanguard's $1 a contract grows with the number of contracts you trade.

Vanguard vs Robinhood for a Roth IRA

Vanguard and Robinhood both offer a Roth IRA, and the 2026 IRS rules below apply the same way at either broker, because the limit is per person, not per account. If you're new to the account type, start with what a Roth IRA is and come back.

2026 Roth IRA ruleFigure
Contribution limit, under 50$7,500

Income phase-out, single$153,000 to $168,000
Income phase-out, married filing jointly$242,000 to $252,000

What differs is what you hold and what leaving costs. A Vanguard Roth can hold Vanguard's index funds and pays no match, and a Robinhood Roth pays the match on ETFs and stocks. Both charge $100 to leave in full, and Robinhood adds any early removal fee on match money from the last 5 years.

Should you choose Vanguard or Robinhood?

Should you choose Vanguard or Robinhood? The answer turns on whether index mutual funds or a match sits at the center of your plan, and the lists below describe who each broker fits. If you want index funds without Vanguard's account fee or fund minimums,Vanguard vs Fidelity covers that choice.

Choose Vanguard if

  • Your plan is built on index mutual funds, including Target Retirement Funds
  • You want a managed index portfolio from $100 at 0.20%

Choose Robinhood if

  • You hold ETFs, contribute every year, and will keep Gold for at least a year
  • You're rolling over an old 401(k) and want a 1% match with no cap
  • You trade stock or ETF options and want no per-contract fee

Price your own match before you open an account

A match is a percentage of your contribution, so its dollar value depends on how much you put in. Fund costs compound over the same decades. Run theTweed retirement calculator with your real contribution, once with the match and once without. The best Roth IRA accounts list compares both brokers with the rest of the field.

If Robinhood fits, you can open a Robinhood account or IRA.

Frequently asked questions about Vanguard vs Robinhood

Does Vanguard charge a fee to buy other companies' funds?

Yes, Vanguard charges $20 per online trade on non-Vanguard transaction-fee mutual funds, under its fee schedule effective July 10, 2026. Sell one within 60 days and a $50 early redemption fee applies too. Robinhood sells no traditional mutual funds at all, so the question only comes up at Vanguard.

Does Robinhood send a 1099 for the IRA match?

No, Robinhood doesn't send a 1099 for the IRA match itself, and the match doesn't count toward your IRS contribution limit. In Robinhood's own words, a match earned in a traditional IRA "generally would be taxable" if you later convert it to a Roth. Vanguard pays no match, so there's nothing to report there.

What is the downside to using Robinhood?

The downside to using Robinhood falls mostly on investors who might leave. Fractional shares can't transfer to another broker and must be sold first. The $100 exit fee can also be charged on top of an early removal fee on recent match money. Robinhood's best perks also depend on keeping Gold at $5 a month.

Why can't I pull my money out of Robinhood?

You usually can't pull money out of Robinhood right away because cash from a sale has to settle before it can be withdrawn. Inside an IRA, IRS withdrawal rules also apply: Roth contributions can come out at any time, but earnings withdrawn early can be taxed and penalized, whichever broker holds the account.

Is Fidelity or Vanguard better?

Fidelity or Vanguard can be better depending on how you buy funds. Fidelity's four ZERO index funds carry a 0% expense ratio with no minimum, and Fidelity charges no account fee or transfer-out fee. Vanguard's funds suit an investor who already holds them, and its $25 account fee goes away with e-delivery.

Who is Robinhood's biggest competitor?

Robinhood's biggest competitors are the other app-first brokers that pay an IRA match, chiefly Public, Webull, and SoFi. Public Reserve, at $20 a month, pays 4% on contributions and Webull Premium pays 3.5%, both above Robinhood's 3% with Gold. Full-service brokers such as Vanguard, Fidelity, and Schwab pay no match and compete on funds instead.

Is Charles Schwab or Vanguard better?

Charles Schwab or Vanguard is better depending on the funds you want and how often you trade. Schwab sets no account minimum and charges $0.65 per options contract, while Vanguard charges $1. Vanguard suits an investor built around its own index funds who can meet the fund minimums and turn on e-delivery.
