Key takeaways

  • IRAs held $19.9 trillion in assets at the end of the second quarter of 2026, up 9.2% from the first quarter.1
  • When choosing between SoFi and Robinhood, start with whether you will pay $5 a month for Robinhood Gold before comparing features. Without Gold, both brokers pay the same 1% IRA match and both charge $100 to leave.
  • Robinhood is the stronger fit for an IRA saver who keeps Gold and trades actively, while SoFi is the stronger fit for a saver who already banks with SoFi and wants a match without a subscription.
In this article

SoFi and Robinhood both pay a 1% match on IRA contributions, but Robinhood raises the match to 3% for Gold members.2 Otherwise the two brokers charge alike, so the Gold subscription is the main difference between them. SoFi runs its brokerage inside a bank and pays its match with no subscription, while Robinhood offers a deeper trading platform and puts its best perks in Gold. This guide compares SoFi and Robinhood across the IRA match, the paid tiers, trading costs, and what each costs to leave.

SoFi vs Robinhood at a glance

SoFi and Robinhood tie on the first rows of this table and differ on the rest. Both brokers' figures were re-checked on their own pages on October 6, 2026, except SoFi's $5 fractional-share minimum, last seen September 9. Check both brokers' pages again before you open an account.

What is SoFi?

SoFi is a bank that owns a brokerage. SoFi Active Investing is the self-directed account in the same app as SoFi Checking and Savings, with no account minimum and fractional shares from $5. SoFi's robo advisor, SoFi Automated Investing, charges 0.25% a year on a $50 minimum.

The SoFi IRA pays 1% on contributions and on 401(k), 403(b), and 457(b) rollovers made through SoFi's own rollover process, with a 5-year hold, SEP IRAs excluded, and no end date stated as of October 6, 2026.3 Tweed'sSoFi Active Investing review covers every fee SoFi publishes, including the fees you pay only when you leave.

What is Robinhood?

Robinhood is a commission-free broker for stocks, ETFs, options, and crypto that now competes on perks as much as on price. Its products include a desktop platform called Robinhood Legend, a managed-portfolio service called Robinhood Strategies, and a $5-a-month Gold subscription that includes most of Robinhood's paid extras. Robinhood's Gold page words its IRA offer as a "3% boost on annual IRA contributions, up to $225 based on the 2026 maximum," with no end date stated as of October 6, 2026. Robinhood vs Webull compares Gold with Webull's cheaper Premium membership.

The Robinhood IRA comes in traditional and Roth versions, up to two of each, and pays 1% on transfers and 401(k) rollovers with no cap whether or not you have Gold. The Robinhood review covers the trading platform and its safety record.

SoFi vs Robinhood features compared

SoFi vs Robinhood features come down to one difference: SoFi gives you its perks without a subscription, while Robinhood gives you bigger ones for $5 a month.

The IRA match

Robinhood pays the larger IRA match with Gold, 3% on contributions vs SoFi's 1%. Without Gold, the two brokers pay the same rate on contributions and on rollovers. Both brokers hold matched money for 5 years. Robinhood adds a second rule: if you cancel Gold within a year of the first Gold match, Robinhood removes the extra 2%. SoFi's match arrives within 5 business days of each settled deposit and does not count toward the IRS limit.

Robinhood Gold vs SoFi Plus

Robinhood Gold costs half as much as SoFi Plus and does more for an IRA saver. SoFi Plus is the one that matches deposits into a taxable account.

Options trading

Options traders pay nothing per contract on stock and ETF options at either broker, and both allow Level 2 strategies inside a self-directed IRA. Robinhood's only options charge is on index options, at $0.50 a contract or $0.35 with Gold, plus exchange fees. SoFi publishes no per-contract fee at all, so only an index options trader will see a difference in cost.

Trading platform and research

Robinhood wins for an active trader, because Robinhood Legend adds real-time streaming data and custom charting on desktop at no extra cost.Interactive Brokers vs Robinhood compares Robinhood with a broker that charges traders per share. SoFi's charting and research are basic, and its app is built around moving money between banking and investing, not around charting.

Banking in the same app

SoFi wins for anyone who wants checking, savings, and investing behind one login, since cash moves between SoFi Checking and the brokerage almost instantly. This page compares the two as brokerages, so it does not compare Robinhood's own cash products with SoFi's bank.

Margin

Robinhood is cheaper for a small margin loan: it publishes 5.25% on balances up to $50,000. SoFi prices margin as a spread over the upper bound of the federal funds target range, and SoFi's own schedule sets that spread at 5.75 points for small balances. The spread alone is larger than Robinhood's whole rate. SoFi margin therefore costs more at any positive fed funds rate.

SoFi vs Robinhood total cost compared

SoFi vs Robinhood total cost depends on three habits: how much you put in an IRA, whether you roll over an old 401(k), and whether you add money to a taxable account every month. The tables below hold today's terms flat and leave out market returns.

An IRA saver who maxes out every year

For a saver putting $7,500 into an IRA each year, Robinhood with Gold ends five years $450 ahead of SoFi.4Without Gold, both brokers pay the same $375 over five years.

A saver rolling over a $50,000 401(k)

A $50,000 rollover earns $500 at either broker, with no cap and no subscription needed at either. The difference is in the match terms: SoFi pays only on rollovers made through SoFi's own rollover process, and Robinhood pays only into self-directed IRAs, not managed Strategies accounts.

A taxable investor depositing every month

SoFi Plus matches taxable deposits, but at $120 a year SoFi Plus pays for itself only once deposits reach $1,000 a month. SoFi also describes a way to get Plus without the fee, so check SoFi's current terms first. The table leaves Robinhood out, because the Gold benefits Tweed confirmed are the IRA match, the cash rate, and margin, not a taxable-deposit match.

SoFi vs Robinhood for a Roth IRA

SoFi and Robinhood both offer traditional and Roth IRAs with the match on either, so the Roth choice depends on the same Gold question. One more point matters if you ever convert: Robinhood says a match earned in a traditional IRA generally would be taxable when you convert it to Roth. If you're still choosing the account type, Tweed's Roth vs traditional IRA guide covers that decision.

Leaving costs the same $100 at both brokers, and both attach a 5-year hold to matched money. At SoFi, moving out within that 5-year window also costs a fee equal to the full match, on top of the $100.5 TheSoFi IRA review and the Robinhood IRA reviewcover each account's rules in full.

Should you choose SoFi or Robinhood?

Choosing SoFi or Robinhood depends on where your money already is and whether you will pay for Gold.

Choose SoFi if

  • You already bank with SoFi and want investing in the same app
  • An IRA match matters to you, but a subscription does not
  • You deposit $1,000 or more a month into a taxable account and would pay for SoFi Plus anyway

Choose Robinhood if

  • You contribute $3,000 or more a year to an IRA and will keep Gold for at least a year, the point where the 3% match covers Gold's cost
  • You want a desktop trading platform
  • You borrow on margin in small amounts

Run the match before you pick the broker

Run the Tweed retirement calculator with your real contribution at 1% and again at 3% to see whether the gap grows into a difference you'd notice at retirement. Frequently asked questions about SoFi vs Robinhood

What is the downside to SoFi?

The main downsides to SoFi are fees that appear after you join, starting with a $25 inactivity fee on any account with no login for 6 months. Interval funds carry a 2% fee. SoFi also does not publish the rate on uninvested brokerage cash and says only that the rate can change daily without notice.

What is the downside to using Robinhood?

The main downside to using Robinhood is how it earns on free trades. Robinhood routes orders to market makers for payment, so the cost shows up in the execution price, not as a fee. The Robinhood IRA also lists stocks, ETFs, and options as what you can hold, with no mutual funds or bonds listed.

Who is SoFi's biggest competitor?

SoFi's biggest competitors in investing are Robinhood and Public, the other commission-free apps that match IRA contributions. In banking, SoFi competes with online banks offering high-yield savings. With Fidelity and Charles Schwab, SoFi competes on its match and on banking in the same app, not on research or fund selection.

Is Fidelity better than SoFi and Robinhood?

Fidelity is better than SoFi and Robinhood for an investor who wants index mutual funds or free exits, because its ZERO funds charge a 0% expense ratio and Fidelity charges $0 to transfer an account out. Fidelity pays no IRA match, though, so a saver who maxes out an IRA gives up the match SoFi and Robinhood pay.

Can you have a Roth IRA at SoFi and Robinhood?

Yes, you can have a Roth IRA at both SoFi and Robinhood, but the IRS limit covers all your IRAs combined, not each account. That cap is $7,500 across both accounts before any catch-up contribution. Each broker matches only what you deposit with that broker. Contributions above the combined limit are excess contributions.

Is SoFi Invest FDIC insured?

No, the stocks and ETFs in a SoFi Invest account are not FDIC insured, because they are securities. SIPC covers them instead if the broker fails. Uninvested cash swept to program banks through Apex Clearing is different. That cash carries FDIC coverage of up to $250,000 per program bank.

Is SoFi or Robinhood safer?

SoFi and Robinhood are equally protected against a broker failing, because SIPC covers securities at both up to $500,000 per customer, including $250,000 for cash. SoFi Invest accounts are held at SoFi Securities LLC and clear through Apex Clearing, while Robinhood accounts are held at Robinhood Financial LLC. Neither protection covers market losses.
