Key takeaways

  • Robinhood had 28.6 million funded customers and $384 billion in total platform assets at the end of August 2026.1
  • When choosing between Robinhood and Webull, start with how much you put into an IRA each year before comparing features. Each broker's paid tier pays for itself only above a set yearly contribution.
  • Webull is the stronger fit for an IRA saver who maxes out and will pay for Premium, while Robinhood is the stronger fit for a margin trader or a saver rolling over a 401(k) who wants a transfer match without a subscription and the holding rules in writing.
In this article

Webull pays a larger IRA match than Robinhood for a smaller fee, 3.5% with Premium vs 3% with Gold, so a saver who maxes out an IRA nets more at Webull.2 Robinhood offers three things Webull's pages don't publish: a transfer match that needs no subscription, a stated margin rate, and a written 5-year hold on matched money. This guide compares Robinhood and Webull across the IRA match, the paid tiers, trading costs, and what each costs to leave.

Robinhood vs Webull at a glance

In the table below, Webull wins the contribution match, while Robinhood wins nearly every row where Webull's own pages give no figure. Both brokers' figures were read on their own pages on October 6, 2026.

What is Robinhood?

Robinhood is a commission-free broker for stocks, ETFs, options, and crypto that competes on perks as much as on price. Its products include a desktop platform called Robinhood Legend, a managed-portfolio service called Robinhood Strategies, and a $5-a-month Gold subscription. Gold adds the extras, from the 3% IRA match to 3.6% APY on eligible brokerage cash. Gold members also borrow their first $1,000 of margin interest-free.

The Robinhood IRA comes in traditional and Roth versions, up to two of each, and pays 1% on IRA transfers and 401(k) rollovers with no cap, Gold or not. The Robinhood review covers the platform and its safety record.

What is Webull?

Webull is a broker whose strongest published offer is its IRA: a 3.5% match on contributions for members of Webull Premium, and 1% on qualifying deposits for everyone else. Webull offers Traditional, Roth, and Rollover IRAs, and its 401(k) rollovers are powered by Capitalize.

Webull's pricing page lists a $75 fee to transfer stock out and pass-through SEC and Consolidated Audit Trail fees.3 Webull charges $0 commission on US-listed stocks, ETFs, and options and sets no deposit minimum. Its margin and cash rates weren't confirmed for this page.

Robinhood vs Webull features compared

Robinhood vs Webull features divide on one question: whether you value the bigger match or the published rules around it.

The IRA match on contributions

Webull pays the larger contribution match, 3.5% with Premium vs Robinhood's 3% with Gold. Without a paid tier, the two tie at 1%. Webull's page describes its free rate as 1% on qualifying deposits, so check which deposits qualify.

Transfers and rollovers

Robinhood pays the transfer and rollover match to everyone, 1% with no cap and no Gold required.4 Webull pays the same 1% only to Premium members, and describes it as a limited-time offer.

Robinhood Gold vs Webull Premium

Webull Premium costs $20 a year less than Robinhood Gold and pays a bigger IRA match. Gold has more perks that Tweed could confirm.

Options and margin

Robinhood wins on margin, because it publishes 5.25% on balances up to $50,000 and Webull's margin rates weren't confirmed for this page. Options are close to a tie, with $0 per contract on stock and ETF options at both. Index options cost $0.50 a contract at both brokers, or $0.35 at Robinhood with Gold.

The rules on matched money

Robinhood is clearer about matched money. Its terms say matched money has to stay in the account for 5 years, and cancelling Gold within a year of the first Gold match removes the extra 2%. Webull's IRA page doesn't state a holding period or clawback. A missing holding period on the page doesn't mean Webull has none, so read Webull's match terms before the first deposit.

Robinhood vs Webull total cost compared

Robinhood vs Webull total cost depends on three habits: how much you contribute, whether you're rolling over a 401(k), and whether you'd pay for a subscription at all. The tables below hold today's terms flat and leave out market returns.

An IRA saver who maxes out every year

For a saver putting the full $7,500 into an IRA each year, Webull with Premium ends five years $287.50 ahead of Robinhood with Gold.5 Without either subscription, both brokers pay $375 in matches over five years.

A saver rolling over a $50,000 401(k)

A $50,000 rollover earns $500 at either broker, while only Robinhood pays it without a subscription. At Webull, the rollover match needs Premium and is offered for a limited time.

Robinhood vs Webull for a Roth IRA

Robinhood and Webull both offer a Roth IRA with the match on contributions, so the Roth choice depends on the same paid-tier math plus how each broker handles transfers and rollovers from other accounts. Webull adds a dedicated Rollover IRA for old workplace plans, while Robinhood pays its transfer match without Gold. If you haven't chosen between a Roth and a traditional IRA yet, the Roth vs traditional IRA guide covers that decision first.

One more rule applies at Robinhood if you ever convert: Robinhood says a match earned in a traditional IRA generally would be taxable when converted to Roth, and it issues no 1099 for the match. The Robinhood IRA review and theWebull IRA review cover each account's rules in full.

Should you choose Robinhood or Webull?

Choosing Robinhood or Webull depends on whether the IRA match is the main thing you want from a broker or one perk among several.

Choose Robinhood if

  • You're rolling over an old 401(k) and don't want to pay a subscription to get the match
  • You trade on margin and want the rate published before you borrow
  • You want the holding rules on matched money spelled out before you deposit

Choose Webull if

  • You contribute $1,600 or more a year to an IRA and will pay $40 for Premium, the point where its 3.5% match covers the fee
  • You want the most contribution match per dollar of membership fee
  • You expect to move the account later and want the cheaper $75 exit

Run the match before you pick the broker

Run the Tweed retirement calculator with your real contribution at both match rates. On a maxed IRA the gap is $37.50 a year before fees, and the retirement calculator shows whether that gap grows into a difference you'd notice at retirement. If Public is also on your list, Public vs Robinhood compares Public's free 1% match and its $20-a-month Reserve plan with Gold.

Frequently asked questions about Robinhood vs Webull

Who is Robinhood's biggest competitor?

Robinhood's biggest competitors are the other app-first brokers, Webull, Public, and SoFi, each of which pays some form of IRA match. Fidelity and Charles Schwab compete for the same savers on funds and research instead. Compared with Webull specifically, the choice comes down to two paid tiers, Gold and Premium, not commissions.

What is the downside to using Robinhood?

The main downside to using Robinhood is how it earns on commission-free trades. Robinhood routes orders to market makers for payment, so the cost shows up in the execution price, not as a fee. The Robinhood IRA also lists stocks, ETFs, and options as what you can hold, with no mutual funds or bonds listed.

Is Webull better than Public?

Webull is better than Public for an IRA saver who will pay for a tier, because Premium nets $222.50 on a maxed $7,500 vs $60 from Public Reserve's 4% for $240 a year. Without a tier, both pay 1%. Public's advantage is range, with Treasuries and a cash rate in the same account.

Is Fidelity better than Robinhood and Webull?

Fidelity is better than Robinhood and Webull for an investor who wants index mutual funds or $0 exits, because its ZERO funds charge a 0% expense ratio and Fidelity charges $0 to transfer an account out. Fidelity pays no IRA match, though, so a saver who maxes out an IRA gives up the match Robinhood and Webull pay.

Can you have a Roth IRA at Robinhood and Webull?

Yes, you can have a Roth IRA at both Robinhood and Webull, but the IRS limit covers all your IRAs combined, not each account. That cap is $7,500 across both before any catch-up contribution. Each broker matches only what you deposit with that broker. Splitting contributions also splits the match.

Is my Roth IRA safe with Robinhood?

Yes, a Roth IRA at Robinhood is held by Robinhood Financial LLC, a SIPC member, with trades cleared by Robinhood Securities LLC. SIPC protects up to $500,000 per customer, including $250,000 in cash, if a member broker fails. SIPC does not protect against investment losses or against Robinhood taking back a match under its own rules.

Why can't I pull my money out of Robinhood?

Money usually can't leave Robinhood until a sale settles, because cash from a trade has to clear before it can be withdrawn. Inside an IRA, IRS rules add a second check: Roth contributions can come out any time, but earnings taken before 59½ and before the account is five years old can be taxed and penalized.
