By Nicolas Straut
Published 7 min read

Key takeaways

  • Range charges $3,950 to $12,500 a year1 and Facet charges $2,600 to $8,700,2 so Facet costs $1,350 less at the entry tier and $7,000 less for the cheapest plan that files your taxes.
  • When choosing between Range and Facet, start with who you want to work with, because Range always assigns a team and Facet assigns one dedicated CFP only on Complete.
  • Range is the stronger fit for a high earner with direct indexing or a complex return, and Facet for a saver who wants a CFP-built plan and tax filing for less.
In this article

Range and Facet both charge a flat yearly fee instead of a percentage of your assets, and they differ on price and structure. Facet is cheaper on every tier, and Range gives every member a team and direct indexing. This guide compares Range vs Facet, often searched as Facet vs Range, on advisors, tax filing, investing, terms, and cost.

What is Range?

Range, also called Range Financial, is a flat-fee wealth management firm that pairs a team of advisors with an AI assistant called Rai. Its plans cost $3,950, $5,950, and $12,500 a year. It manages your investments at Apex Clearing or Altruist and charges no asset-based advisory fee.

From Platinum up, Range adds CPAs and tax projections, and it lists backdoor Roth conversions among its services. The Range review works out where each plan breaks even vs a 1% fee.

What is Facet?

Facet, also called Facet Wealth, is a flat-fee financial planning firm that pairs members with Certified Financial Planners (CFPs) by video and phone. Its plans cost $2,600, $5,500, and $8,700 a year, and every plan includes investment management and unlimited messaging with planners.

Tax filing and equity compensation planning start on Plus. The Facet review covers each tier's break-even and Facet's estate planning add-on.

Range vs Facet features compared

Range vs Facet features split on six things: who you work with, tax work, equity pay, investing, how you reach them, and the contract. Each section opens with the firm that comes out ahead.

Who you work with

Facet wins on who you work with if you want one named planner, because Facet Complete assigns a dedicated CFP and Range never does. Facet Core members meet Facet's pool of CFP professionals, Plus members get a dedicated CFP team, and only Complete, at $8,700, lists one dedicated CFP. Range's pricing page answers "Will I have one advisor?" with "Nope," and assigns CFPs and CFA charterholders on every plan, with CPAs from Platinum.

Both firms let you and a spouse or partner share one membership. If you want a dedicated Facet planner, check which tier you're quoted before you pay for one.

Tax filing and tax planning

Facet wins on the price of tax filing, because it files your return from Plus at $5,500, and Range files only on Titanium at $12,500. Range Titanium covers one federal return and up to three state returns, plus FBAR and FATCA forms, up to 9 investment properties, and up to 10 K-1s. Each extra K-1 costs $100 and each extra state $500.

Facet's filing runs through Taxfyle, with an independent CPA or Enrolled Agent, audit representation, and amended returns, but its pricing page doesn't say how many states or K-1s it covers. For a multi-state return with K-1s, Range states the scope in writing, so ask Facet before you rely on Plus.

Stock options and RSUs

Range wins on depth for stock options and RSUs, because its Platinum plan lists 10b5-1 plans, QSBS, early exercise, and secondary sales, and Facet lists equity planning in general terms. Both firms start equity work on the middle plan, and Facet Plus costs $450 a year less than Range Platinum. Range also adds CPAs and tax projections on Platinum, which equity decisions usually need.

Investing and direct indexing

Range wins on investing, because it offers direct indexing and tax-loss harvesting on every plan, and Facet offers direct indexing only on Complete. Direct indexing means holding an index's individual stocks instead of a fund. Both firms pass on an outside fee for it: up to 0.15% a year at Facet, and 0.12% to 0.22% at Range on certain taxable strategies.

Facet recommends direct indexing only for taxable accounts of $200,000 or more. Range's cash account pays a variable 3.50% APY as of October 2026.

Meetings, messages, and AI help

Meetings are close to a tie, because Facet sets a meeting count by plan and Range offers video calls as needed plus an AI assistant. Every Facet plan also includes unlimited messaging with planners.

Range's Form ADV says Rai answers defined categories of questions without a Range professional reviewing them first.3 If a Rai answer would change a tax or investment move, confirm it with an advisor.

Renewal and cancellation terms

Neither wins on renewal and cancellation terms, because both memberships run a year at a time and renew on their own. Facet's planning agreement renews automatically with at least two weeks' notice of the renewal date, and fees for the term stay owed after you cancel.4 If you leave managed assets at Facet more than 30 days after the term ends, its Form ADV adds a $10 monthly fee per account.

Range's advisory agreement renews at the price listed on the renewal date unless your written notice reaches Range before then.5 Its ADV says fees generally aren't prorated if you cancel, so put the renewal date in your calendar the day you join.

Range vs Facet pricing starts at $3,950 and $2,600 a year, and the tables below price the plan you'd need for each kind of help. They use prices from October 18, 2026, paid annually, and hold prices flat. Facet adds a $300 enrollment fee if you pay quarterly.

Titanium's stated scope is wider, so if Facet won't cover part of your return, add a preparer's fee to the Facet column before you compare.

If you want direct indexing

If you want direct indexing, you'll pay $4,550 to $5,050 a year with Range Premium on a $500,000 taxable balance and $9,450 with Facet Complete.

Should you choose Range or Facet?

Whether you should choose Range or Facet depends on who you want to work with, which plan files your taxes, and whether you want direct indexing. The Range review and Facet review each compare the firm with a 1% fee, and Facet alternatives covers other firms.

Choose Range if

  • You want direct indexing and tax-loss harvesting without paying for a top plan
  • You hold stock options or RSUs and want 10b5-1, QSBS, or early-exercise planning with a CPA
  • You file in several states or have more than a few K-1s and want the scope in writing
  • You'd rather message an AI assistant and a team than wait for a set meeting

Choose Facet if

  • You want to pay $1,350 a year less for planning and investing
  • You want your taxes filed for $5,500 instead of $12,500
  • You want one dedicated CFP and you're ready for Complete
  • You want a set number of planning meetings each year

Before you sign a year-long membership, project the balance you'll have in five or ten years with the Tweed Retirement Calculator. A flat fee shrinks as a share of a growing account. If you're comparing AI money apps instead of planners, Mezzi vs CFO Silvia covers that pair.

Frequently asked questions about Range vs Facet

Are Range and Facet fiduciaries?

Yes, Range and Facet are both fiduciaries for their advice, because each is an SEC-registered investment adviser. That means their advice must put your interests first and disclose conflicts. Registration doesn't guarantee skill, and neither firm gives legal advice, so an estate attorney still reviews anything beyond standard documents.

Is my money safe with Range or Facet?

Your money with Range or Facet sits at an outside custodian, not with the firm itself. Range uses Apex Clearing or Altruist, and Facet generally uses Apex Clearing. SIPC protection at those custodians covers a brokerage failure up to its limits, and it doesn't cover market losses on your investments.

Do Range or Facet include a will or trust?

Range and Facet both offer will and trust documents, but not free on every plan. Facet sells them as a Wealth.com add-on at $1,200 the first year, then $100 a year. Range lists document creation on Platinum and Titanium, and its comparison table also marks wills and trusts as an additional fee, so ask before you join.

How do I switch from Facet to Range?

To switch from Facet to Range, cancel Facet for the next term in writing or in its dashboard, then open Range's accounts and transfer your holdings. Move them within 30 days after Facet's term ends to avoid its $10 monthly fee per account, and expect a $75 outgoing transfer fee at Apex.

Who are Range's and Facet's main competitors?

Range's and Facet's main flat-fee competitor is Domain Money, which charges $3,900 to $9,000 in the first year and $1,000 less each year after. It assigns one dedicated CFP on every plan. Empower is the main percentage-of-assets alternative, charging 0.89% a year on balances from $100,000 to under $1 million.
