Key takeaways

  • Betterment charges $5 a month on balances under $24,000, and 0.25% a year once you set up $200 or more in monthly deposits or reach $24,000.1
  • Premium adds a team of CFP planners for 0.65% a year once your household has $100,000 in eligible investments, and both plans charge less on dollars above $1 million.
  • Consider Betterment if you'll deposit every month or want a planner without a 1% fee, and compare Wealthfront, which charges 0.25% at every balance with no flat fee.
In this article

Betterment is a robo-advisor that builds and runs an ETF portfolio for $5 a month, or 0.25% a year once you deposit $200 a month or hold $24,000. Premium adds a team of CFP professionals for 0.65%. This review covers its fees, Premium, Cash Reserve, IRAs, the cost to leave, and alternatives, with every figure as Betterment's pages and Form ADV stated it on October 25, 2026.

What is Betterment?

Betterment is an online investment adviser that builds and manages a portfolio of ETFs for you, and it also offers a cash account and a Premium tier with financial planners. The adviser is Betterment LLC, which is registered with the SEC and was organized in 2009.

You can use Betterment in three ways. It can run a managed portfolio for you, you can buy stocks and ETFs yourself in a self-directed account, or you can hold savings in its Cash Reserve account.

Who is Betterment for?

Betterment is for a saver who wants the portfolio picked and managed, and its price favors anyone who deposits every month.

Savers who deposit every month

Savers who deposit every month pay less. A $200 monthly recurring deposit moves the account to 0.25% from the first dollar, so a $5,000 balance costs $12.50 a year instead of $60. Set the deposit up before the first month's fee posts.

Investors who want tax-loss harvesting

Investors who want tax-loss harvesting get it in the managed fee, with tax coordination across taxable accounts and IRAs. It only helps in a taxable account, since gains inside an IRA aren't taxed each year. Our Betterment vs Wealthfront comparison covers how the two robo-advisors handle tax features.

Households that want a planner

Households that want a planner can use Premium once they hold $100,000 across eligible accounts: IRAs, an HSA, a Solo 401(k), and taxable accounts. Planners can help with a backdoor Roth, which accounts to use, and money held outside Betterment, and they'll work with your CPA. If you had an Ellevest app account, it moved to Betterment in 2025 (see our Ellevest review), so this is now your pricing.

Betterment pros and cons

Betterment's pros are no minimum balance, a lower fee if you deposit monthly, CFP planners on Premium, and high FDIC coverage on cash. Its cons are a flat fee on small balances, some portfolio cash that earns nothing, no IRA match, and a fee to move out.

Betterment pros

No minimum balance

You can open an account with a $10 first deposit and keep any balance after that.

A lower fee with monthly deposits

A $200 monthly recurring deposit gets you the 0.25% rate at any balance, so you skip the $5 flat fee.

CFP planners on Premium

Premium gives you calls with a team of salaried CFP professionals who act as fiduciaries.

High FDIC coverage on cash

Cash Reserve spreads your money across program banks for up to $8 million of FDIC coverage on a joint account, or $4 million for one owner.

Betterment cons

$5 a month on small balances

Without monthly deposits, $60 a year is 6% of a $1,000 balance and 1.2% of $5,000.

Some portfolio cash earns no interest

Since May 2026, managed taxable, HSA, and IRA portfolios hold a small slice of cash that pays no interest, and the banks that hold it pay Betterment.

No IRA match

Betterment pays no match on IRA contributions. SoFi and Robinhood both do.

$75 to move each account

Moving a taxable account and two IRAs to another firm costs $225.

How does Betterment's $5 monthly fee work?

Betterment's $5 monthly fee applies on any day your household's investing balance is under $24,000, unless you have a $200 monthly recurring deposit set up.2 Any day over $24,000 costs that day's share of 0.25% instead. So a balance that moves back and forth across the line can cost a little more than $5 in a month.

The $24,000 counts Cash Reserve and self-directed accounts across your household, but not Betterment Checking. The table shows a year's fee at seven balances.

$500,000$1,250$1,250$3,250
$1,500,000$3,250$3,250$7,250

Above $1 million, both plans charge 0.15% on the next $1 million and 0.10% after $2 million. Premium's extra 0.40% stops at $1 million, so Premium never costs more than $4,000 a year over Digital. Fund expense ratios come on top and weren't priced for this review.

Betterment fees and features

Betterment charges one management fee and few others. The table shows each fee and feature as Betterment's pages showed it on October 25, 2026.

Automated investing

Automated investing is Betterment's robo-advisor, which builds an ETF portfolio for your goal, rebalances it, and runs tax-loss harvesting in taxable accounts. Since May 2026, managed taxable, HSA, and IRA portfolios also hold a small cash allocation that earns no interest. Betterment doesn't charge its fee on that cash, and its filings don't say how big the slice is.

Betterment added Custom Portfolios in July 2026. You pick the stocks and ETFs, Betterment manages them, and the fee is the same 0.25% as its other managed accounts.

Self-directed investing

Self-directed investing lets you buy stocks and ETFs yourself with no commissions, and Betterment doesn't charge its management fee on it. It counts toward the $24,000 line but not toward Premium's $100,000.

Cash Reserve

Cash Reserve paid a 3.50% variable APY as of September 21, 2026, through program banks, with a $10 minimum deposit.3 New clients get 0.75% more on up to $1 million through February 15, 2027, and Premium clients get 0.25% more. Our best high-yield savings accounts roundup compares bank rates.

Betterment Checking, a separate account, reimburses ATM and foreign transaction fees and charges no overdraft fees.

Betterment Premium

Betterment Premium costs 0.65% a year and gives you calls with a small group of CFP professionals who work together, not one dedicated advisor.4 The planners are salaried, never paid on commission, and act as fiduciaries. They'll advise on accounts outside Betterment, but they aren't CPAs and can't file your taxes.

Premium also includes priority support, the Cash Reserve boost, a securities-backed line of credit, and 20% off estate planning with Trust & Will. You can move back to Digital at any time.

Betterment IRA review

A Betterment IRA comes as a traditional, Roth, or SEP IRA, managed for the same fee as a taxable account, and Betterment pays no contribution match. Your deposit habit decides what the IRA costs. The 2026 IRA limit of $7,500 works out to $625 a month,5 which clears the $200 line, so a monthly saver pays 0.25%, or $18.75 on a full year's contribution.

If you put the $7,500 in at once with no recurring deposit, and you have under $24,000 at Betterment, you pay the $60 flat fee instead. Our Roth IRA guide covers who can contribute. The table covers one year, before returns.

The SoFi and Robinhood matches only stay yours if the money stays 5 years, and Robinhood also needs a year of Gold. Our best Roth IRA accounts roundup names Betterment the pick for automatic monthly deposits.

How much does it cost to leave Betterment?

Leaving Betterment costs $75 for each investing account you transfer to another firm, and $0 if you sell and withdraw to your linked bank account.

Transfer one account out$75$0
Transfer three accounts out$225$0

Selling in a taxable account, instead of moving the holdings, can trigger capital gains tax. If you took Betterment's new-client reward of up to $2,000, moving the money out within 3 years of the reward date adds an early removal fee on top of the $75. The Tweed Brokerage Account Bonus Calculator shows what a bonus is worth before you commit.

Is Betterment worth it in 2026?

Betterment is worth it for some savers and not others, and the store ratings split the same way. Betterment had 4.6 stars from 19,525 Google Play ratings and 1.3 stars from 84 Trustpilot reviews on October 20, 2026.

The fee looks low, but at $5,000 with no monthly deposit it's 1.2% a year, more than Premium's 0.65% planner tier. The price is built for monthly savers and for balances above $24,000, where it matches Wealthfront's 0.25%.

Is Betterment Digital worth it?

Betterment Digital is worth it if you'll keep a $200 monthly deposit going or already have $24,000 to invest, because you'll then pay 0.25% like Wealthfront. If you'll fund it once and leave it under $24,000, the flat $60 a year costs more.

Is Betterment Premium worth it?

Betterment Premium is worth it if you'll use the planners each year, because it costs $400 more than Digital for every $100,000, up to $4,000 a year. That's less than a 1% adviser and less than Empower at the same balance, but you get a team, not one adviser, and no tax filing. Our Facet review covers a flat-fee planner, and Facet alternatives lists other planner options.

Betterment vs alternatives

Betterment's closest alternatives are Wealthfront and Schwab for managed investing and Empower for a percentage-fee adviser.

Betterment vs Wealthfront

Wealthfront costs less than Betterment under $24,000 if you don't deposit monthly, and it charges $0 to transfer out. Betterment adds a planner tier that Wealthfront doesn't have. Our Betterment vs Wealthfront page compares them in full, and the Wealthfront review covers its cash account.

Betterment vs Schwab

Schwab Intelligent Portfolios charges no management fee from $5,000, so it costs less than Betterment at any balance above that. Betterment has no $5,000 minimum. Schwab offers tax-loss harvesting only from $50,000, and you have to turn it on; our best robo-advisors roundup compares both.

Betterment Premium vs Empower

At $500,000, Betterment Premium costs $3,250 a year and Empower's 0.89% costs $4,450. Empower gives you an advisor team from $100,000 and a dedicated advisor from $250,000. Our Empower review covers its tiers.

Frequently asked questions about Betterment

Is Betterment safe?

Yes, Betterment is safe within the limits of SIPC protection. Its brokerage, Betterment Securities, is a member of FINRA and SIPC, and SIPC covers your securities if the firm fails, though not market losses. Our Betterment vs Wealthfront page covers the SEC's 2023 order on Betterment's tax-loss harvesting.

Is Betterment a bank?

No, Betterment isn't a bank. Betterment LLC is an SEC-registered investment adviser and Betterment Securities is its broker-dealer. Cash Reserve money sits at partner program banks, and Betterment Checking and its Visa debit card come from nbkc bank, Member FDIC, so each account has its own coverage.

Is Betterment better than Fidelity?

Betterment is better than Fidelity for a saver who wants CFP planners at 0.65%, and Fidelity is better for a small managed account. Fidelity Go charges nothing under $25,000 and 0.35% from $25,000, while Betterment charges $5 a month or 0.25%. Fidelity Go invests in Fidelity's own Flex funds.

Who owns Betterment?

Betterment Holdings, Inc. owns Betterment. Its Form ADV says Betterment LLC, the adviser, is a wholly owned subsidiary of Betterment Holdings. The same holding company is also the parent of Betterment Securities, the broker-dealer, Betterment for Business, and Betterment Financial, which offers the checking account.

What do Betterment complaints say?

Betterment complaints on Trustpilot mostly concern withdrawals: account holds, slow transfers, and locked accounts. The site showed 84 reviews averaging 1.3 stars in October 2026, while Google Play showed 4.6 stars from more than 19,000 ratings. Before moving money, check the CFPB complaint database and r/betterment for recent threads.

Can you lose money with Betterment?

Yes, you can lose money with Betterment's investing accounts, because its portfolios hold stock and bond ETFs whose prices fall as well as rise. SIPC and FDIC protection don't cover market losses. Cash Reserve works differently: the balance doesn't fall with markets, but its variable rate can drop.

Is Betterment good for beginners?

Yes, Betterment suits beginners who want investing done for them, because it asks for your goal and timeline and builds a portfolio for each goal. You don't need to choose funds yourself. Its support team answers account questions at no cost, but it isn't licensed to give financial advice.
