Key takeaways

  • YNAB has one plan. It costs $109 a year or $14.99 a month after a 34-day free trial with no card, and up to six people can share one subscription.1
  • When deciding whether YNAB is worth it, start with the time you'll give it. The YNAB Method asks you to decide what each dollar is for before you spend it, so the app only pays off if you keep planning.
  • YNAB fits someone who wants to plan this month's money and pay down debt. If you mainly want to watch balances and investments, Monarch Money Core costs $9.01 less a year and syncs them for you.
In this article

YNAB is worth it if you'll plan your money before you spend it, because the method is what you're paying for, not the app. It costs $109 a year or $14.99 a month, with a 34-day trial and no card. This review covers how the YNAB Method works, what it costs to leave, and the alternatives.

What is YNAB?

YNAB, short for You Need a Budget and pronounced "why-nab", is a paid budgeting app built around one method for deciding what your money is for. The web app is the flagship, with apps for iPhone, iPad, Android, and Apple Watch that sync in real time. It's ad-free, and subscriptions pay for it.

Who is YNAB for?

YNAB is for people who want to tell their money where to go, not just see where it went.

People who want to plan before they spend

People who want to plan before they spend get the most from YNAB, because you decide what each dollar does before the next paycheck lands. The app records what happened, and the plan comes first.

Households that share money

Households that share money can put up to six people on one subscription, so a couple or a family pays $109 a year in total. Split six ways, that's under $19 a person.

People paying down debt

If you're paying off a loan or a card, YNAB's loan planner shows how much interest and time you'll save with every extra dollar you put toward the balance. The debt payment becomes one more line in the plan.

YNAB pros and cons

YNAB's pros are the trial, the sharing, and a method that plans for irregular bills, and its cons are the price and the effort.

YNAB pros

  • The 34-day trial needs no credit card when you sign up directly.
  • Up to six people share one subscription.
  • The method sets money aside each month for car repairs, holidays, and other bills that don't arrive monthly.
  • Apps for the web, iPhone, iPad, Android, and Apple Watch, and they work offline.

YNAB cons

  • There's no free plan, and the yearly price is $109.
  • The method takes regular time, and it stops working when you stop planning.
  • Retirement and investment accounts don't import, so you update them by hand.
  • Cancelling doesn't refund the rest of a plan you've paid for.

How the YNAB Method works

The YNAB Method comes down to one question you ask whenever money arrives: what's it for?2 YNAB applies that question five ways. Money is for now (what you need before the next paycheck), for later (irregular costs saved in monthly amounts), for ease (getting a month ahead on bills), for you (what you want from life), and for change (a plan you can rewrite without guilt).

Older reviews describe YNAB as four rules. YNAB's own method page now frames it around the one question, and the habits those rules taught, such as saving for irregular bills and getting a month ahead, sit inside it.

YNAB features

YNAB features beyond the plan come down to three things: bank import, targets and the loan calculator, and how it handles net worth.

Bank import and syncing

Bank import links your accounts and pulls in transactions automatically, and Apple Card has its own import. Everything syncs across your devices in real time, and you can keep working offline.

Targets and the loan calculator

Targets set a goal for a spending or savings category and show your progress at a glance. The loan calculator works out what extra payments save in interest and time, and spending reports show trends such as your average grocery bill.

Net worth and retirement accounts

YNAB has a net worth report, but your 401(k), IRA, and HSA won't import transactions, so YNAB suggests adding them as unlinked accounts and updating the balance by hand.3 Those balances count toward net worth, not your plan. To see how yours compares, check net worth by age, and our ProjectionLab review covers a planner that syncs YNAB balances.

How much does YNAB cost?

YNAB costs $109 a year or $14.99 a month, plus tax where it applies, and it's one plan with two ways to pay.

BillingPriceWorks out toFree trial
Annual$109 a year$9.08 a month34 days, no card
Monthly$14.99 a month$179.88 a year34 days, no card

Tweed read YNAB's pricing page on October 26, 2026.

Paying yearly saves $70.88 over twelve monthly payments. Five years of the annual plan at today's price comes to $545. YNAB emails you seven days before the trial ends, and you won't be charged unless you subscribe.

How much does it cost to leave YNAB?

Leaving YNAB costs the rest of the period you've paid for, because cancellation takes effect at the end of your billing period and the cancellation policy offers no refund for the time left.4 You keep access until then, and you can resume if you change your mind.

Cancel in Account Settings in the web app, since billing isn't available in the mobile app. A plan bought through the App Store or Google Play is cancelled and refunded under that store's rules, and a trial needs no cancelling at all.

Cancelling doesn't delete your account or data, which YNAB keeps under its data retention policy. Until you're sure you'll stick with the method, pay monthly, so leaving costs one month at most.

Is YNAB worth it in 2026?

YNAB is worth it in 2026 if you'll plan every paycheck in it, because the plan is the product. The annual price is $109, or $9.08 a month, and it covers up to six people.

It doesn't fit someone who wants a passive dashboard, or an investor who wants balances updated for them. Use the 34-day trial to plan at least one full paycheck cycle before you pay.

YNAB vs the alternatives

YNAB vs the alternatives comes down to how much planning you'll do by hand, whether you want a free plan, and whether you want investments tracked for you.

YNAB vs Monarch Money

YNAB vs Monarch Money is planning vs tracking, and Monarch Core costs $99.99 a year, $9.01 less than YNAB.5 Monarch syncs your investments and refunds the unused part of a plan billed directly, but its trial is 7 days with a payment method. Our Monarch Money review covers its Core and Plus plans.

YNAB vs Copilot Money

YNAB vs Copilot Money is hands-on vs automatic, because Copilot sorts your spending for you. Copilot costs $95 a year, $14 less than YNAB, and runs on Apple devices and the web with no Android app. Our Copilot Money review covers its refund window and sharing.

YNAB vs Rocket Money

YNAB vs Rocket Money is paid vs free, because Rocket Money has a free plan and YNAB doesn't. Rocket Money Premium is priced on a sliding scale you choose, and Premium+ costs $15 a month.

YNAB vs Empower

YNAB vs Empower is a plan vs a dashboard. Empower's net worth dashboard is free and syncs your investments, and Empower earns from advice that costs 0.89% a year with a $100,000 minimum. Our Empower review covers its fees, and Empower alternatives covers other free options.

YNAB plans this month, not the next thirty years, so once your retirement balances are in it, run the Tweed Retirement Calculator for the long view. Then add up what you own and owe in the Tweed Net Worth Calculator.

Frequently asked questions about YNAB

Is YNAB safe?

Yes, YNAB is safe for most people to connect to their bank. Its features page lists data encryption, two-factor authentication, and data centers accredited multiple times over. The app is ad-free and shows no third-party products, so YNAB has no reason to sell you anything beyond your subscription.

Is YNAB free for college students?

Yes, YNAB is free for one year for college students. You'll prove you're enrolled with a college ID card, a transcript, or a tuition statement, and YNAB sends a student invite once you're verified. After that year, you'd pay $109 a year or $14.99 a month like anyone else.

Is there a YNAB referral or discount?

Yes, a YNAB referral is the main discount. A friend's link gives you a six-week free trial with no credit card, instead of the usual 34 days. When you subscribe, you and your friend each earn a free month, and there's no limit on how many months a subscriber can earn this way.

Does YNAB work on Android?

Yes, YNAB works on Android through a full-featured app on Google Play. It also runs on the web, iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch, and one subscription covers all of them. Billing changes and cancellations happen in the web app, though, not in the mobile app's settings.

Does YNAB work offline?

Yes, YNAB works offline on your computer, phone, or tablet, according to its features page. You can record a purchase while you have no signal, and YNAB updates every device once you reconnect. That helps if you like to log spending at the register instead of waiting for the bank import.

Will YNAB raise its price?

YNAB can raise its price, because its terms let it change subscription fees going forward. If your price goes up, YNAB says it will notify you as the law requires and give you a chance to cancel before it charges you the new rate at renewal. Each renewal is charged at the rate current at that time.

Does YNAB connect to other apps?

Yes, YNAB connects to other apps through its public API and a Zapier integration. Planning tools build on that, too. ProjectionLab has a YNAB plugin that syncs your account balances into a retirement plan, so you can keep budgeting in YNAB and model the long term somewhere else.
