Our evaluation is independent all the same: every fee, rate, and rule on this page comes from the provider's own terms, observed on the date shown under the headline, and our verdict would read the same either way. Providers can change or end their offers without notice, and they do not review our pages before we publish.

Key takeaways
- ProjectionLab Premium costs $129 a year, billed annually only, and the pricing page lists no Lifetime plan, so a one-time price you find quoted elsewhere is out of date.1
- ProjectionLab is a planning sandbox you fill in by hand: you enter balances, income, and goals, and it projects them with Monte Carlo trials, historical backtesting, and tax estimates, without linking any account.
- ProjectionLab suits a hands-on saver who wants to model Roth conversions, ACA subsidies, and early retirement in detail, and Empower suits someone who wants accounts linked automatically and an advisor available for a fee.

ProjectionLab is a retirement planning tool you build by hand, with a free Basic plan and a $129 Premium plan now sold only as an annual subscription.2 This review covers who ProjectionLab is for, what each plan costs, how it handles your data, and how it compares with Boldin, Empower, and Mezzi. You'll also see when Premium is worth the extra $129.
Who is ProjectionLab for?
ProjectionLab is built for three kinds of saver: people pursuing FIRE, people a few years from retiring who need to model taxes, and people who won't link their accounts to an app.
People planning to retire early
ProjectionLab suits people planning to retire early because its milestones can set your retirement date by a balance or an age instead of a fixed year, and its founder built it with the FIRE movement in mind. It also models 72(t) SEPP distributions and Roth conversion ladders, the two common ways to reach retirement money before age 59½. For your target, the 4% rule is the usual starting point.
Pre-retirees planning Roth conversions and health insurance costs
Pre-retirees planning Roth conversions get the most from Premium's Tax Strategies, which let you pick a tax bracket, an ACA subsidy limit, or an IRMAA threshold and convert up to it. ACA subsidies help pay for marketplace health insurance before Medicare, and IRMAA is the surcharge Medicare adds to premiums at higher incomes.
Planners who'd rather not link their accounts
Planners who'd rather not link their accounts can use ProjectionLab without connecting a bank or brokerage, and it doesn't ask for account numbers. The trade-off is upkeep, since you update your balances yourself.
ProjectionLab pros and cons
ProjectionLab's strengths are its tax modeling and how much of the plan you can change, and its weaknesses are setup time and manual upkeep.
ProjectionLab pros
- A free Basic plan with Monte Carlo simulations and historical backtesting
- Premium models Roth conversions, ACA subsidies, and estate taxes for $129 a year
- No account linking required and no account numbers asked for
- Reports export to PDF, CSV, or JSON, so your plan isn't locked in
- Tax presets for Canada, Germany, Switzerland, and other countries
ProjectionLab cons
- No direct account linking, so balances are updated by hand or through third-party plugins
- Premium is annual only, so you can't pay for a single month
- No Lifetime plan for new customers
- A long setup, with more inputs than a simple retirement calculator
- No human advisor, and ProjectionLab says its tools are educational, not financial advice
How ProjectionLab works
ProjectionLab models your retirement by projecting each year from the balances, income, expenses, and milestones you enter, then running the plan through thousands of market sequences.
Building a plan with milestones
A ProjectionLab plan is a timeline of accounts, income, expenses, and milestones such as a home purchase or retirement, and a milestone can depend on conditions, such as reaching a balance. Flows, renamed from Priorities in April 2026, decide where each year's surplus goes: savings goals, debt payoff, or specific accounts.
Chance of success and past-market tests
ProjectionLab's Chance of Success runs your plan through Monte Carlo trials with random returns, or through real past market years, and reports the share of trials that don't run out of money. You set the growth and inflation assumptions yourself. That's why two people with the same balance can see different results.
Tax planning and Roth conversions
ProjectionLab's tax planning changed most in version 4.6.0, released April 20, 2026, which added Tax Strategies: you set a target such as a bracket, an IRMAA threshold, or an ACA subsidy limit, and the plan converts to Roth, shields withdrawals, and harvests gains up to it.3 The same release added ACA subsidy estimation, Social Security estimates from the figures on your SSA statement, and Medicare as a plan expense. Detailed tax analytics are a Premium feature.
Does ProjectionLab connect to your accounts?
No, ProjectionLab doesn't link to your bank or brokerage accounts directly, and its help center says so in those words.4 The company says it intends to explore optional account linking and lists it on its public roadmap. Until then, three plugins can move data in:
- YNAB plugin: syncs account balances
- Monarch Money plugin: imports data from Monarch Money
- Lunch Money plugin: pulls in budgeting data from Lunch Money, ProjectionLab's official partner
You turn plugins on in Settings and enter a Plugin API key. Third-party developers build them, not ProjectionLab, so read each plugin's terms and privacy information before you enable it.
Without a plugin, you update balances on the Current Finances screen, and each update saves a progress point with your net worth. Plan on a monthly or quarterly update, because a plan you don't update drifts from your real balances.
How much does ProjectionLab cost?
ProjectionLab costs $0 on its Basic plan, $129 a year for Premium, and $549 a year for Pro, as listed on its pricing page on October 12, 2026.
| Plan | Price | Billing | Free trial | What it adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Basic | $0 | No payment needed | Not needed | Forecasting, financial planning, Monte Carlo simulations, historical backtesting, flexible modeling |
| Premium | $129 a year | Annual only | 7 days | Tax optimization, Roth conversions, ACA subsidies, withdrawal strategies, estate planning, Compare mode, multiple plans, international planning |
| Pro | $549 a year | Annual or monthly | 7 days | Everything in Premium plus client management, 10 client seats, and extra clients for $2 a month |
What the free plan includes
ProjectionLab's free Basic plan includes Monte Carlo simulations and historical backtesting, and it needs no payment method. It's enough to build a full plan before you decide on Premium.
Premium and Pro
ProjectionLab Premium is the plan for pre-retirees and early retirees: Roth conversions, ACA subsidies, withdrawal strategies, Compare mode, and estate planning. At $129 a year, it works out to about $10.75 a month, paid up front. Pro is built for financial advisors and coaches managing clients.
What happened to Lifetime and monthly billing
ProjectionLab no longer sells a Lifetime plan to new customers, and Premium can no longer be paid month to month. The pricing page lists no Lifetime option, and the billing help page says only Pro can be paid monthly. If a review or video quotes a one-time price, check the pricing page before you plan around it.
How much does it cost to leave ProjectionLab?
Leaving ProjectionLab costs nothing beyond the subscription you've already paid, and you can take your plan with you.
| Step | What happens |
|---|---|
| Cancel Premium | Cancel in Account Settings; the changelog says premium features last until the next bill date, then you're on Basic |
| Ask for a refund | Email support for any reason; refunds are reviewed case by case, with no stated time limit |
| Export your plan | Reports export to PDF, CSV, or JSON, and JSON import and export work for backups |
| Delete your account | In the app, after you cancel; backups expire on a fixed schedule and some billing records may be kept |
There's no linked account to disconnect, but export a JSON backup first, because you'll rebuild your inputs in your next tool.
Is ProjectionLab worth it?
ProjectionLab has no independent rating to point to, so this verdict works in dollars instead of stars. The most-read ProjectionLab thread on Reddit asks how accurate its projections are, and the accuracy section below answers it.
ProjectionLab said in June 2025 that it had reached $1 million in annual recurring revenue with no outside funding.5 Its security page says it never sells your data, and subscription funding explains the annual-only pricing and why there's no advisory service to upsell. Premium is worth paying for if you'll spend a few hours on setup, keep it updated, and use the tax modeling, and it's the wrong fit if you want linked accounts or someone to tell you what to do.
Is Premium worth $129 a year?
ProjectionLab Premium is worth $129 a year if you'll use its tax modeling, because the free Basic plan already covers projections and Monte Carlo.
| Cost to plan with | Year 1 | Over 5 years |
|---|---|---|
| ProjectionLab Basic | $0 | $0 |
| ProjectionLab Premium | $129 | $645 |
| Mezzi Advisory, billed annually | $399 | $1,995 |
| Empower advisory at 0.89% on $100,000 | $890 | $4,450 |
The five-year figures assume today's prices and, for Empower, a balance that stays at $100,000. Mezzi and Empower sell advice and ProjectionLab sells software, so the table compares what you'll pay, not what you'll get. Build your plan in Basic first, then start the 7-day Premium trial so the trial days go to the Premium features.
How accurate are ProjectionLab's projections?
ProjectionLab's projections are as accurate as the assumptions you give them, because the same balance projects differently at different return, inflation, and spending inputs. Before comparing ProjectionLab with a planner's software, match the return and inflation assumptions. The Tweed Retirement Calculator gives you a quick second estimate at the same inputs.
ProjectionLab vs the alternatives
The closest alternatives to ProjectionLab are Boldin, Empower, and Mezzi, and they split on whether they link your accounts and whether they sell advice.
| ProjectionLab | Empower | Mezzi | |
|---|---|---|---|
| What it is | Planning software you fill in by hand | Free dashboard plus a paid advisory service | SEC-registered adviser delivered as an app |
| Links your accounts | No; plugins for YNAB, Monarch Money, and Lunch Money | Yes | Yes, read-only |
| Paid price | $129 a year (Premium) | 0.89% a year from $100,000 | $399 a year (Advisory) |
| Human advice | No | Yes, on the advisory tiers | No |
| Holds or manages your money | No | Yes, on the advisory tiers | No |
Mezzi advises on the accounts you have today and ProjectionLab projects the decades ahead, so the two can work together. The Mezzi review covers its plans.
ProjectionLab vs Boldin
ProjectionLab vs Boldin is the comparison readers most often run, and the main difference is account linking. Boldin's paid PlannerPlus plan links your accounts through data aggregators, and ProjectionLab has you enter balances by hand.
ProjectionLab vs Empower
ProjectionLab vs Empower comes down to how each one earns: Empower links your accounts for free and earns from a percentage-fee advisory service, and ProjectionLab links nothing and charges a flat subscription. The Empower review covers its advisory tiers and fees.
Run the Tweed Retirement Calculator to see where your savings land at retirement. If you're aiming to retire early, the Tweed Coast FIRE Calculator shows when you can stop contributing, and if Roth conversions are the reason you're considering Premium, the Tweed Roth Conversion Plan builds a ten-year conversion schedule.
If you want a full plan you build yourself, start on ProjectionLab's free Basic plan before you start the Premium trial. Plans and prices are on ProjectionLab's pricing page at projectionlab.com/pricing.
Frequently asked questions about ProjectionLab
Is ProjectionLab safe?
ProjectionLab is safe to use in that it never holds your money or links to your bank. Its security page lists encryption in transit and at rest, multi-factor sign-in, and controls designed to align with SOC 2, which is not a SOC 2 certification. Paddle, not ProjectionLab, processes payments as the merchant of record.
How long is the ProjectionLab free trial?
The ProjectionLab free trial lasts 7 days on Premium and Pro and converts to a paid plan on the 7th calendar day after you sign up, counted in Greenwich Mean Time. That can be slightly less than seven full days, so cancel a day early if you don't plan to pay.
Does ProjectionLab have an app?
ProjectionLab runs in your browser, and you can install it on a phone as a web app from the browser. Its changelog says the team now works only on the web version and has ended self-hosting. Edits sync across devices, so a change on your laptop shows up on your phone.
Who owns ProjectionLab?
ProjectionLab is owned by ProjectionLab LLC and was started in 2021 by Kyle Nolan, who built it as a side project and went full time in November 2023. It was called ProjectiFi until April 2022. The company says it runs with a growth partner and contractors drawn from its user community.
Does ProjectionLab work outside the US?
ProjectionLab works outside the US, with tax presets for countries including Canada, Germany, and Switzerland, and international planning is a Premium feature. Recent releases added Canada Pension Plan and Old Age Security estimates, UK pension withdrawal methods, and Australian franking credits. Check that your country's rules are covered before you pay.
What do ProjectionLab reviews on Reddit say?
ProjectionLab reviews on Reddit mostly praise how much you can customize, and the most-read threads question how accurate long projections are. Threads on r/projectionlab cover the end of monthly Premium and new Lifetime plans, so check the date on any price you see quoted in a Reddit post before you plan around it.
