Moomoo is worth it for an options trader who wants $0 contracts and detailed research in one app, but it can't hold retirement savings, because Moomoo Financial offers individual cash and margin accounts only, with no IRA.2 What its cash earns depends on a paid membership. This review covers its fees, Moomoo Engine, safety, the cost of leaving, and the alternatives.
What is Moomoo?
Moomoo is a trading app from Moomoo Financial Inc., a US broker-dealer in Jersey City, New Jersey, that offers commission-free stocks, ETFs, and options along with research and charting tools. The broker is a Delaware corporation regulated by the SEC and FINRA, and its shareholder is Futu US Inc., part of Futu Holdings, which is based in Hong Kong and listed on Nasdaq. FINRA approved the broker in January 2018.
A Moomoo account is an individual cash or margin account, and Moomoo offers no IRA or joint account. The sections on what you can trade and on Moomoo Engine cover what the account holds and what the paid membership adds.
Who is Moomoo for?
Moomoo is for self-directed traders who want $0 options pricing and detailed market data, and who keep their long-term savings at another firm.
Options traders who want $0 per contract
Options traders who want $0 per contract pay no commission and no contract fee on stock and ETF options at Moomoo, only pass-through regulatory fees of a few cents per contract, and index options cost $0.50 a contract. A margin account allows options strategies up to Level 4, and a cash account stops at Level 2. The cost section lists every fee.
Traders who want research and charts in one app
Traders who want research and charts in one app get quotes, charts, and news on one screen, plus free tools such as valuation models, an options profit and loss simulator, and an indicator backtester. Moomoo Engine adds members-only tools, including Morningstar research, options Level 2 data, and an options screener.
Investors who already have an IRA somewhere else
Investors who already have an IRA somewhere else can use Moomoo as a taxable trading account next to it, since Moomoo offers no IRA and no joint account. The same account also trades Hong Kong stocks and China A-shares, which the trading section covers.
Moomoo pros and cons
Moomoo's pros come from its pricing and data, and its cons come from what the account can't hold and what the cash earns.
Moomoo pros
- $0 commission on US stocks, ETFs, and stock and ETF options, with no per-contract fee
- No minimum deposit for cash or margin accounts
- Hong Kong stocks and China A-shares in the same app
- Moomoo Engine costs $0.99 a month once your assets top $1,000, less than Robinhood Gold's $5
- A registered broker-dealer and member of FINRA and SIPC, approved by FINRA on January 19, 20183
Moomoo cons
- No IRA, Roth IRA, or joint account
- Cash earns 0.03% without a Moomoo Engine membership
- 6.8% margin, above Robinhood's 5.25% top rate
- $75 each time you transfer stocks out
- Index options cost $0.50 a contract
If the missing IRA is the dealbreaker, Robinhood offers $0 options contracts and an IRA with a match in one account, as the Robinhood review explains, and best IRA accounts compares the rest.
What is Moomoo Engine?
Moomoo Engine is a paid membership that costs $3.99 a month or $39.90 a year, falls to $0.99 a month once your account assets exceed $1,000, and raises the interest on your cash from 0.03% to 3.6%, according to Moomoo's terms.4 The fee comes out of your brokerage account and renews automatically. You can cancel any time in the app, but Moomoo doesn't refund the period you've already paid for.
| Without Engine | With Engine | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | $0 | $3.99 a month, $0.99 above $1,000 in assets, or $39.90 a year |
| Interest on cash (Cash Sweep) | 0.03% APY | 3.6% APY |
| Interest-free margin | None | First $1,000 |
| Research tools | Free tools, including valuation models and an options profit and loss simulator | Adds Morningstar research, options Level 2 data, and an options screener |
New customers get a 4.5% booster on top of 3.6% for 60 days on the first $20,000, and after that, cash earns 0.03% unless you keep Engine. Apps that give free stocks covers Moomoo's NVDA deposit bonus and its 60- to 180-day asset tests. Moomoo can raise Engine's price with 30 days' written notice, and the cash rates can change at any time.
What can you trade on Moomoo?
You can trade US stocks, ETFs, and options on Moomoo, plus Hong Kong stocks and China A-shares, in an individual cash or margin account. US stocks include OTC stocks, preferred stocks, and fractional shares, per the fee schedule. Moomoo doesn't manage money for you or make investment recommendations, so there's no robo portfolio.
Crypto runs through Moomoo Crypto Inc., a separate company, at $0 commission plus a 0.49% transaction fee, and crypto isn't covered by SIPC. Moomoo's help center describes crypto withdrawals to personal wallets and outside exchanges, rolling out to accounts gradually, so check the app for the option before you buy coins you may want to move.
How much does Moomoo cost?
Moomoo costs $0 to trade US stocks, ETFs, and stock and ETF options, and it makes money on margin, index options, transfers, and its Engine membership, according to its fee schedule updated October 1, 2026.5

|---|---|
| US stocks, ETFs, ADRs, OTC | $0 commission; $0 platform fee "during promotion" |

| Index options | $0.50 per contract plus exchange fees |
| Pass-through options fees | ORF $0.0122, OCC $0.025, CAT $0.0003 per contract |
| SEC fee on sells | $0.0000206 times the sale amount, $0.01 minimum |
| Outgoing wire | $20 domestic, $25 international |
| Assisted phone trade | $10 |
| Printed statements | $3 each plus postage |
Trading fees at Moomoo stay at $0 on stock trades because of a platform fee promotion that has run since November 2018. Moomoo says it can end that promotion with 30 days' notice.
Margin rates
Margin rates at Moomoo are 6.8% a year on US stocks at every balance and 8.8% on China A-shares. A margin account under $2,000 in assets can trade only with cash, and margin can lose you more than you deposit. The table holds each balance for a full year, and Robinhood's rate comes from Tweed's Robinhood review.
| Borrowed for a year | Moomoo, 6.8% | Moomoo with Engine (first $1,000 free) | Robinhood Gold, 5.25% (first $1,000 free) |
|---|---|---|---|
| $5,000 | $340 | $272 | $210 |
| $10,000 | $680 | $612 | $472.50 |
| $25,000 | $1,700 | $1,632 | $1,260 |
How much does it cost to leave Moomoo?
Leaving Moomoo costs $75 each time you transfer stocks out, according to Moomoo's help center. Moomoo moves stocks out by a DTC free-of-payment transfer, which normally takes two to three weeks. Cash goes out free by ACH, and an outgoing wire costs $20 domestic or $25 international.
NVDA shares from the deposit bonus stay locked until your average assets hold the tier's threshold for 60 to 180 days, so moving money out early can cost you the reward. Robinhood charges $100 and Webull $75 for an outgoing transfer, per Tweed's reviews of each.
Is Moomoo worth it in 2026?
Moomoo is worth it to most of the people who rate it: its app scores 4.7 from about 37,000 App Store ratings, and Trustpilot shows 4.1 from 744 reviews, as of October 12, 2026. Those ratings mostly judge the app's tools. The 0.03% cash rate and the transfer fee only show up once you hold cash or leave.
Moomoo gives trading away for $0 and earns on margin, index options, transfers, and a membership, so it costs least if you trade options, keep little idle cash, and stay. Moomoo fits if you trade options often and your retirement savings are elsewhere. It's a weaker fit if you want one account for everything, an IRA, or interest on cash without a subscription.
Is Moomoo Engine worth it?
Moomoo Engine is worth it once your assets top $1,000, because it then costs $11.88 a year, and about $333 of idle cash at 3.6% earns that back. Below $1,000 in assets it costs $3.99 a month, and you'd need about $1,341 in cash to earn that back, more than the account holds. If you'd rather not pay a broker to earn interest, one of the best high-yield savings accounts pays without a membership.
| Cash in the account for a year | Without Engine (0.03%) | With Engine (3.6%) |
|---|---|---|
| $1,000 | $0.30 | $36 |
| $5,000 | $1.50 | $180 |
| $20,000 | $6 | $720 |
| $50,000 | $15 | $1,800 |
Moomoo vs alternatives
Moomoo vs alternatives comes down to whether you need an IRA and what you'll pay to earn interest on cash. Moomoo's figures come from its own pages on October 12, 2026, and Robinhood's and Webull's from Tweed's reviews of each, and Robinhood vs Webull compares those two directly.
| Moomoo | Robinhood | Webull | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stock and ETF commission | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Stock and ETF options, per contract | $0 | $0 | $0 |
| Index options, per contract | $0.50 | $0.50 ($0.35 with Gold) | $0.50 on certain index options |
| Paid tier | Engine, $0.99 to $3.99 a month | Gold, $5 a month | Premium, $40 a year |
| Interest on cash | 0.03%, or 3.6% with Engine | 3.6% APY with Gold | Not confirmed |
| Margin, smaller balances | 6.8% | 5.25% | Not confirmed |
| IRA | None | Yes, 1% match (3% with Gold) | Yes, 1% match (3.5% with Premium) |
| Outgoing transfer fee | $75 | $100 | $75 |
Moomoo vs Robinhood
Moomoo vs Robinhood starts from the same options price, since both charge $0 per stock and ETF options contract, and both memberships pay 3.6% on cash and make the first $1,000 of margin interest-free. Robinhood's margin is lower and it offers an IRA with a match, as the Robinhood review details. Moomoo's membership costs less, and its account adds Hong Kong stocks and China A-shares.
Moomoo vs Webull
Moomoo vs Webull is close on trading costs, since both price stock and ETF options at $0 per contract and charge $75 to transfer stocks out. Webull adds IRAs with a match of up to 3.5% with Premium, as the Webull review covers, and Moomoo has no IRA.
Add up what your idle cash would earn with and without Engine, what a year of margin costs at 6.8%, and the $75 transfer fee if you leave, then compare the total with your current broker. You can compare the rest of the field in best brokerage accounts.
Frequently asked questions about Moomoo
Is Moomoo safe and legit?
Yes, Moomoo is a legitimate broker. Moomoo Financial Inc. is a registered broker-dealer and a member of FINRA and SIPC, and Futu Clearing Inc. clears its trades and holds customer assets. Its FINRA BrokerCheck report lists two regulatory events and three customer arbitrations, so read them before you fund an account.
Is Moomoo good for beginners?
Moomoo is good for beginners who want to learn on a small account, since there's no minimum deposit and stock trades cost $0. The app packs in a lot of data, and Trustpilot reviewers say its options features take time to learn. A cash account is the safer start, because it can't borrow on margin or sell short.
Is Moomoo FDIC insured?
Yes, Moomoo's swept cash can be FDIC insured, but your investments aren't. Uninvested cash in the Cash Sweep program moves to partner banks, where it's eligible for FDIC insurance up to the program's limits, but it isn't covered by SIPC once it's swept. Stocks, ETFs, and options are never FDIC insured.
What happens if Moomoo goes bust?
If Moomoo goes bust, SIPC protects the securities and cash held in your brokerage account up to $500,000, including $250,000 for cash. SIPC doesn't cover losses from falling prices. Crypto held with Moomoo Crypto Inc. isn't SIPC protected, and swept cash relies on FDIC coverage at the partner banks instead.
Has Moomoo been fined?
Yes, Moomoo has been fined by FINRA twice. A November 2024 settlement fined it $750,000 over paid influencer posts that weren't fair and balanced or approved by a principal, and missing privacy notices to 456,156 customers. A December 2025 settlement fined it $125,000 over large options position reporting, and Moomoo neither admitted nor denied either set of findings.
What are the most common Moomoo complaints?
The most common Moomoo complaints are about withdrawals, slow account verification, and customer support, based on Trustpilot reviews. Trustpilot's summary of 367 recent reviews flags the same issues, along with options features that some users find complicated. Few complaints are about trading costs, which are $0 on stocks and stock options.
