Tweed is committed to editorial integritySome links on this page are referral or affiliate links, which means Tweed is paid when you open an account or sign up through them. That payment never changes what we write.

Payment never influences our evaluations: every fee, rate, and rule on this page comes from the provider's own terms, observed on the date shown under the headline, and our verdict would read the same without the link. Providers can change or end their offers without notice, and they do not review our pages before we publish.

Key takeaways

  • Greenwood closes every account at the end of the day on November 12, 2026, nothing moves automatically, and any balance left over is mailed to you by check.1
  • When choosing a Greenwood alternative, check whether it pays interest. DreamFi, the account Greenwood points members to, costs $9.99 a month, pays no interest, and ends its balance bonus on October 31, 2026.2
  • The best Greenwood alternatives are DreamFi for Greenwood's $40 member offer, SoFi for checking and savings in one account, and Capital One 360 for no-fee checking with 70,000+ ATMs.
In this article

Greenwood is closing all of its accounts on November 12, 2026, and is inviting members to join DreamFi. You don't have to join it. SoFi, Capital One 360, Wealthfront, and Peak Bank all charge no monthly fee, and this guide compares five Greenwood alternatives on fees, interest, and how you get paid.

What happens to your Greenwood account on November 12?

Your Greenwood account closes at the end of the day on November 12, 2026, and your card, transfers, bill pay, and deposits stop working then. Until that day the account works as it does today, except Mobile Deposit, which is off during the transition. Anything sent to the account after November 12 is returned to the sender.

You won't lose money you leave behind. The balance stays FDIC insured at Greenwood's partner bank and is mailed by check to the address on file by December 2, 2026. There's no fee to close, and Greenwood says the closure doesn't affect your credit score.

Greenwood is inviting members to DreamFi, but joining is optional. Greenwood doesn't share your information with DreamFi, and you can move your money to any bank you choose.

The best Greenwood alternatives reviewed

Each Greenwood alternative below gets the same five facts, so you can compare them on what decides a move. Picks 1 to 4 can take your paycheck, and pick 5 is a savings account for money you want to earn interest.

1. Best for Greenwood's member offer: DreamFi

Ideal for

A Greenwood member who wants the account Greenwood points to and would use DreamFi's telehealth, roadside help, and phone protection.

Our take

DreamFi is the Greenwood alternative for Greenwood's member offer, because members who sign up from Greenwood's page get 30 days free and $40 back. The $40 comes after 60 days of membership and one purchase of $10 or more. After the free month it costs $9.99 a month, so your first year costs $69.89 once the $40 is taken off.

The checking account pays no interest, and DreamFi has no savings account. Its monthly balance bonus ends October 31, 2026, even though Greenwood's page still lists the bonus tiers. To cancel the membership you have to close the checking account, and our DreamFi review covers the fee and the limits of each benefit.

SoFi is the Greenwood alternative for checking and savings together, because SoFi Checking and Savings charges no account fees and pays 3.30% APY on savings with eligible direct deposit.3 New members can add a 1.10% boost, for 4.40% APY, for up to six months.

SoFi also pays a $50 or $400 bonus for eligible direct deposits of $1,000 or more. Our SoFi referral code guide explains how the bonus tiers work, and you can open a SoFi Checking and Savings account from here.

3. Best for no-fee checking and ATMs: Capital One 360

Ideal for

A Greenwood member who uses cash and ATMs and wants a free checking account from a large bank.

Our take

Capital One 360 is the Greenwood alternative for no-fee checking, because 360 Checking has no monthly fees, no minimum balance, and no overdraft fees.4 You can use 70,000+ fee-free Capital One, MoneyPass, and Allpoint ATMs, and you'll get your paycheck early once direct deposit is set up.

Savings is a separate Capital One account. For higher savings rates, see our best high-yield savings accounts roundup. Capital One's checking pages didn't show a sign-up bonus on October 20, 2026, so check the Tweed Checking Account Bonus Finder for current offers.

4. Best for earning interest on your paycheck: Wealthfront

Ideal for

A Greenwood member who wants the paycheck itself to earn interest and spends with a debit card.

Our take

Wealthfront is the Greenwood alternative for interest on your paycheck, because its Cash Account pays a 3.55% base APY on the whole balance and comes with direct deposit, a debit card, and bill pay.5 New clients add 0.65% for 3 months on up to $150,000, and the rate can reach 4.45% with an investing account and monthly deposits.

Wealthfront isn't a bank, so program banks hold your cash, with up to $8 million of FDIC eligibility and no account fees. Our Wealthfront review covers the cash account and investing, and you can open a Wealthfront account from here.

5. Best for the highest savings rate: Peak Bank

Ideal for

A Greenwood member moving a savings balance who already has a checking account for spending.

Our take

Peak Bank is the Greenwood alternative for savings, because its Envision High Yield Savings pays 4.27% APY with no direct deposit or monthly requirement. That's about $107 in a year on $2,500.

It takes $100 to open, and Peak holds your opening deposit for five business days. There are no monthly fees, and each customer can have one account. It's savings only, so pair it with one of picks 1 to 4 for your paycheck.

Methodology for choosing the best Greenwood alternatives

Our methodology for choosing the best Greenwood alternatives started from the account Greenwood points members to and the checking and savings accounts Tweed already covers. Business directories list Greenwood's competitors, but they don't show where a member can move a paycheck.

We kept accounts any US adult with a Social Security number can open online. We checked each fee and rate on the provider's own page on October 20, 2026, and for each one we recorded the monthly fee, what the balance earns, and who holds the money.

What to do before November 12

Greenwood won't move your money for you, so do these five things before the end of the day on November 12, 2026.

  1. Open your new account first, since a new debit card can take 7 to 10 business days to arrive.
  2. Move your balance by transfer, ATM withdrawal, or a check from Greenwood support. For a large balance, contact support at [email protected] or 844-625-1921. A live agent answers the phone Tuesday to Thursday, 11am to 7pm Eastern.
  3. Point your paycheck and automatic payments at the new account. Change Social Security, VA, or other government benefit deposits with the agency now, because the switch can take a full payment cycle.
  4. Check the mailing address in the Greenwood app, since any leftover balance is mailed there. You can change it in the app through November 12, or through support through November 24.
  5. Download your statements, which stay in the app through December 22, 2026. A tax form for interest you earned in 2026 arrives by January 31, 2027.

Before you move a paycheck, see which banks pay a bonus for one in the Tweed Checking Account Bonus Finder. Then see whether a savings bonus beats your rate in the Tweed Savings Account Bonus Calculator, and use the Tweed CD Calculator for savings you won't touch for a year.

Frequently asked questions about Greenwood alternatives

Is Greenwood still a bank?

Greenwood was never a bank, because it's a financial technology company and Coastal Community Bank, Member FDIC, provided its banking. That banking program ends when the accounts close on November 12, 2026. For checks and disputes after December 22, 2026, you contact Coastal Community Bank using the details in your final notice.

Did DreamFi buy Greenwood?

No, DreamFi didn't buy Greenwood. Greenwood calls it a partnership between two separate companies, co-founded by civil rights leaders Andrew Young at Greenwood and Ben Crump at DreamFi. If you join, you apply to DreamFi directly, and DreamFi approves the account under its own privacy policy.

What happens to Greenwood Invest?

Greenwood Invest closes on its own, earlier timeline, because Invest accounts are held at DriveWealth. Customers had until October 20, 2026 to sell their holdings or move them to another broker, and DriveWealth was set to sell what was left on October 21. DreamFi doesn't offer investing, so you'll need a brokerage for that money.
