SoFi Active Investing review: Is it worth it in 2026?

Key takeaways

  • SoFi holds a 4.3 out of 5 TrustScore on Trustpilot from 13,737 customer reviews, observed in September 2026, for the company as a whole rather than the brokerage alone.1
  • SoFi Active Investing charges $0 commissions on stocks, ETFs, and options contracts, but moving your account to another broker costs $100 per transfer.
  • SoFi Active Investing is best for a beginner who already banks with SoFi and wants a 1% IRA match, while Robinhood is better for an active trader who wants deeper charting and a larger match through its paid tier.
In this article

SoFi Active Investing is the self-directed brokerage inside the SoFi app. In 2026 it charges no commissions on stocks, ETFs, or options contracts, pays a 1% match on IRA contributions and rollovers, and charges $100 to transfer your account out.2This review examines every fee SoFi publishes, what the IRA match is worth by retirement, how safe the account is, and where SoFi Plus does and does not pay for itself. You'll also learn why the most-read Reddit thread about SoFi Invest is about leaving, not joining.

This review covers SoFi's self-directed brokerage. For the IRA and its match on their own, see the SoFi IRA review.

Who is SoFi Active Investing for?

SoFi Active Investing is built for a beginner or casual investor who wants banking and investing in one app, not for a day trader or a research-heavy stock picker.

Beginners who already bank with SoFi

The app moves cash between SoFi Checking and the brokerage almost instantly, there is no account minimum, and fractional shares start at $5. The trade-off is a platform that NerdWallet and Motley Fool both describe as light on research and charting.

IRA savers who want the 1% match

SoFi pays 1% on IRA contributions and 401(k) rollovers with a 5-year holding period and no employer plan required. SEP IRAs are excluded. If you have not settled the account type yet, start with what a Roth IRA is and the Roth vs traditional IRA decision before you weigh the match.

Options traders who want no contract fees

SoFi charges $0 commissions and $0 per-contract fees on options. It offers Level 1 and Level 2 strategies, 0DTE contracts, and options inside IRAs. SoFi doesn't support multi-leg strategies beyond Level 2.

Open an account

SoFi Active Investing charges $0 commissions

Stocks, ETFs, and options all trade with no commission and no per-contract fee, on an account with no minimum and $5 fractional shares. The rest of this review prices what SoFi charges everywhere else.

If the $100 transfer-out fee is the dealbreaker, Fidelity charges $0 to transfer an account out (see our Fidelity IRA review).

Is SoFi Invest safe and legit?

Yes, SoFi Invest is a legitimate brokerage. Accounts are held through SoFi Securities LLC, a FINRA member, cleared by Apex Clearing, and covered by SIPC up to $500,000 including $250,000 for cash. Uninvested cash swept to program banks carries FDIC coverage of up to $250,000 per program bank through the Apex sweep.

Those protections cover a broker going under. They don't cover a broker being slow. The top Reddit thread about SoFi Invest describes an outbound transfer flagged as fraud and a locked account. That is a service risk, not a solvency risk, and a phone call fixed it in that thread. SoFi doesn't publish how often fraud flags happen, so budget extra time if you ever move the account.

SoFi Invest fees and features in detail

SoFi Invest charges $0 to trade and charges fees almost everywhere else. The table below lists every figure SoFi publishes on its own pages as of October 6, 2026, with the fractional-share and mutual fund fees last observed September 9, 2026.

Stock and ETF commissions

Stock and ETF trades carry $0 SoFi commission, with regulatory pass-through fees still applied on sells. Expense ratios on SoFi's own ETFs and mutual funds run 0.03% to 0.40%. SoFi cites a J.D. Power 2026 ranking of #1 in DIY investor satisfaction. That ranking is SoFi's claim, and it doesn't measure cost.

Options trading with no contract fees

Options trades cost $0 in commissions and $0 per contract, and NerdWallet named SoFi "Best for No Options Contract Fees" for 2026. SoFi offers Level 1 and Level 2 strategies, 0DTE contracts, do-not-exercise instructions, and options inside self-directed IRAs. On stock and ETF options, that puts SoFi level with Robinhood and Public, not ahead of them, because both also charge $0 per contract there. Robinhood charges per contract only on index options ($0.50, or $0.35 with Gold), while Public pays a rebate on each contract instead.

Fractional shares from $5

Fractional shares start at $5, and not every stock is available fractionally. Fractional orders route to market immediately, and fractional positions may carry no voting rights. Fractional positions may not transfer by ACAT, so you may have to sell them first if you ever leave.

The 1% IRA match

The 1% IRA match is paid within 5 business days of each settled deposit and does not count toward the contribution limit. The match applies to Active and Automated traditional and Roth IRAs and has no cap on 401(k), 403(b), or 457(b) rollovers made through SoFi's flow. The 2026 IRA limit is $7,500, or $8,600 at age 50 and up, so a maxed contribution earns $75 or $86 in match. The SoFi IRA review covers the rollover match, the 5-year hold, and the exit costs. What that 1% is worth by retirement depends on your horizon, so run the Tweed retirement calculator twice: once with your planned contribution and once with the contribution plus 1%.

The 1% IRA match needs no paid tier

A maxed 2026 contribution of $7,500, or $8,600 at age 50 and up, earns $75 or $86, paid within 5 business days of each settled deposit and held for 5 years.

Margin rates

Margin is priced in tiers off the upper bound of the target federal funds range. The primary self-directed account is a margin account by default.3Robinhood charged 5.25% on margin balances up to $50,000 as of October 6, 2026. SoFi's small-balance rate is higher than Robinhood's whenever the fed funds upper bound is above zero.

Crypto through SoFi Bank

SoFi offers crypto through SoFi Bank instead of the brokerage, and relaunched crypto inside the app in late 2025. It offers 25-plus coins and a SoFiUSD stablecoin, with funding and withdrawals restricted to the connected SoFi account. Per SoFi's own page, crypto is not SIPC-covered and stablecoins are not FDIC-insured. SoFi's crypto page says "your account may incur fees" without stating a figure.

SoFi Automated Investing, the robo option

SoFi Automated Investing needs a $50 minimum, charges a 0.25% annual advisory fee, runs ETF portfolios with automatic rebalancing, and includes one complimentary 30-minute planner session. It does not offer tax-loss harvesting. The 0.25% fee is a fair price for a hands-off saver who would otherwise never rebalance. A three-ETF portfolio in the free active account does the same job for someone willing to rebalance once a year. Wealthfront vs SoFi compares SoFi Automated Investing with Wealthfront's robo-advisor at the same fee.

Interest on uninvested cash

Uninvested cash is swept by Apex Clearing to program banks and earns interest at a rate SoFi says "can change daily without notice" and does not publish on the page. SoFi Checking and Savings pays a stated APY, and the app moves cash there in seconds. Keep idle cash in SoFi Checking and Savings, not the brokerage.

The new-account stock bonus and referral offer

SoFi runs two new-account offers, each with its own catch. You can open SoFi Invest through Tweed's referral link, and the SoFi referral code guide covers the mechanics, timing, and taxes on both sides. As of October 6, 2026, SoFi's official rules describe the sign-up offer as up to $1,000 in stock, or $2,000 with SoFi Plus, with no end date stated.4SoFi's Active Investing page still advertises "up to $3,000" at the same odds. That figure conflicts with the official rules, so trust the rules.

Is SoFi Plus worth it for investors?

SoFi Plus is rarely worth it for investors alone, because most of its benefits sit on the banking side. SoFi Plus costs $10 per month, or nothing with qualifying direct deposit. Its investing benefits are a 1% match on cash deposits into taxable Invest accounts with a 5-year hold, unlimited planner sessions instead of one, preferred IPO allocation, and a doubled sign-up stock bonus (up to $2,000, at the same 0.028% top-prize odds).

Monthly taxable depositAnnual matchAnnual SoFi Plus cost
$500$60$120
$1,000$120$120

The match alone does not cover the subscription until taxable deposits pass $1,000 a month. With qualifying direct deposit, SoFi Plus costs nothing, so whether SoFi Plus is worth it to you depends on your bank account, not the brokerage.

What does SoFi Invest cost to leave?

SoFi Invest charges $100 for an outgoing ACAT transfer, whether full or partial. The Reddit thread focuses just on this fee.5

Scroll horizontally to see more columns.
ActionFee
Full or partial outgoing ACAT transfer$100
IRA closing feeAssessed when the balance drops below $100; the amount is on SoFi's fee schedule
Inactivity$25 per account after 6 months with no login
Incoming ACAT$0; SoFi reimburses up to $75 of the old broker's fee on transfers of $5,000 or more

Fractional shares may not transfer and have to be sold first. A login, not a trade, resets the inactivity clock. Dividends and interest payments do not count as activity. A fraud flag on an outbound ACATS takes a phone call to resolve, so budget time for that call.

Is SoFi Active Investing worth it?

SoFi Active Investing is worth it for the beginner it was built for, and the third-party scores agree. Keep in mind that high ratings measure how the app feels when you join. Your risk is in leaving, where SoFi charges $100 and the most-read community thread is about an ACATS transfer that went wrong.

SoFi is a bank that owns a brokerage, so it wants your cash inside the app: the sweep rate is unpublished, the transfer fee is high, and the match ties deposits up for 5 years. Consider SoFi Active Investing if you already use SoFi Checking, plan to hold an IRA for 5 years or longer, and trade options occasionally. SoFi vs Fidelity covers the case for a broker with no match and no fee to leave. Consider Robinhood if you want a larger IRA match with a paid tier and a deeper trading platform. Consider Public if you want bonds and a higher cash yield inside the brokerage itself. If the account is a Roth, compare options in the best Roth IRA accounts shortlist.

SoFi Active Investing vs alternatives

SoFi Active Investing's closest alternative is Robinhood, and each wins on different costs.

IRA match1%, no subscription1%, or 3% with Gold ($5 a month)

SoFi Active Investing vs Robinhood

SoFi wins on a match that needs no paid tier and on banking integration, while Robinhood wins on the larger match with Gold and the stronger trading platform, including a desktop app. Both charge $100 to leave. The Robinhood review covers Robinhood's fees and safety in full, and SoFi vs Robinhood puts the two IRA matches and paid tiers side by side.

SoFi Active Investing vs Public

Public offers bonds and a high-yield cash account inside the brokerage, which SoFi does not list. SoFi offers banking integration, which Public does not. Both pay a 1% match on IRA contributions without a subscription, though Public's $20-a-month Reserve plan raises its contribution match to 4%. The Public review covers Public's fees and account types, and Public vs SoFi compares the two head to head.

Run your own retirement number before you open an account

A 1% match is only as big as the contributions behind it, so run the Tweed retirement calculator with your real numbers. Then compare the two IRA matches and the two transfer-out fees in the Robinhood comparison above. If you decide SoFi fits, open SoFi Invest through Tweed's referral link, because SoFi cannot add a referral bonus after the account is open.

Ready to decide

SoFi suits a beginner who already banks with SoFi

SoFi fits if you plan to hold an IRA for 5 years or longer and trade options occasionally. Price the $100 outgoing ACAT fee first, because it applies to a partial transfer as well as a full one.

Frequently asked questions about SoFi Active Investing

Is SoFi investing good for beginners?

Yes, with one caveat to know before you open an account. The $0 minimum, $0 commissions, and $5 fractional shares remove the usual barriers to a first account. SoFi doesn't publish its sweep rate on uninvested cash, so the brokerage is a poor place to leave money idle between trades, a common beginner habit.

How does SoFi Active Investing make money?

SoFi Active Investing earns money from margin interest, payment for order flow, interest on cash swept to program banks through Apex Clearing, mutual fund transaction fees, the $100 outgoing transfer fee, and the $25 inactivity fee. SoFi also uses the brokerage to deepen banking and lending relationships. Banking and lending bring in most of the company's revenue.

How to get $1000 from SoFi investing?

You do not get $1,000 outright, because $1,000 is the top prize in a random draw. Fund a new Active Invest account with $50 of settled money within 45 days and pick your stock inside the same window. Roughly 85% of people receive the $5 minimum, and SoFi Plus members receive double at identical 0.028% top-prize odds.

What happens if I leave SoFi before the match holding period ends?

If you leave SoFi before the 5-year holding period ends, SoFi charges an early withdrawal fee equal to the full bonus or match amount, plus the $100 ACAT fee. In practice, if you transfer out early, you'll give back every dollar of match on that money and pay another $100.

Why can't I withdraw money from SoFi Invest?

Cash from a sale has to settle before it can leave, and new deposits are held for a period before withdrawal. Both holds are standard brokerage practice. Larger or unusual outbound transfers, including ACATS moves to another broker, can be flagged for fraud review and locked until SoFi verifies them by phone. The top Reddit thread about SoFi Invest describes this situation.

Is SoFi better than Robinhood?

Neither wins outright, and your cash balance usually decides which one fits. SoFi fits someone who wants the 1% IRA match without paying for a subscription and already banks with SoFi. Robinhood fits someone parking a large uninvested balance, because Gold pays 3.6% on eligible cash and SoFi doesn't publish its sweep rate.

Does SoFi offer a $3,000 stock bonus?

No, not under SoFi's official rules, which cap the sign-up offer at $1,000 in stock, or $2,000 for SoFi Plus members, as of October 6, 2026. SoFi's Active Investing page still advertises up to $3,000 at the same 0.028% odds. That figure conflicts with the official rules, so read the rules before opening the account.
